Lynwood "Lyn" Pitman, age 95, passed away on July 8, 2025, in Dover, Delaware.
Lyn was born February 5, 1930, in Abington, Pennsylvania to the late Ambrose and Eva Pitman. He grew up in a rural farming community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and was the eighth child in a family of twelve children. He was the last surviving child.
Lyn married Katharine "Kay" (Kane) Pitman 68 years ago. They were married at Saint Rose of Lima church in North Wales, Pennsylvania and raised their family in North Wales. He is survived by his wife, Kay, and his children: Terri Pauls of South Carolina, Cheryl Kitts of Massachusetts, and Gary Pitman of Florida. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, whom he
referred to as the "Double D's" (Doug Pauls and Drew Kitts). He was lovingly known as "Grampy" to his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Lyn was a proud veteran and loved to wear his Korean War baseball hat wherever he went. He joined the Air Force in 1948 before the start of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of Staff Sergeant and stayed in the Army Reserve until 1956. One of his favorite stories to tell was when he was stationed in England
with the 31 st Fighter Wing. During a General Eisenhower visit, Lyn was responsible for escorting dignitaries to various events. Since he was short in stature, he was given a new pair of shoes with lifts in them so he would be taller than most of the dignitaries' wives.
From the late1960's to early 1990's, Lyn officiated swim meets and soccer games for high schools and colleges in Pennsylvania and was a fixture in his white uniform at the local summer league swim meets. He was known
as "Mr. Handyman" to his friends and neighbors. He had the uncanny ability to fix just about anything. Aesthetics were not important to him; he got the job done using whatever tools or supplies he had on hand. He retired from the telephone company after working for 37 years for Bell of Pennsylvania and then Verizon. In 1992, Lyn and Kay retired to Lewes, Delaware and then moved to Dover, Delaware, ten years later.
Lyn lived his life with tough, working hands. His grandchildren once saw him rip out a wooden stair banister like it was a toothpick. But as strong as he was through 95 years, Lyn will be remembered most for his gentleness, patience, and loving warmth.Lyn loved gardening, puzzles, woodworking, lawn games, camping, attending his children's and grandkid's sporting events, and telling (and retelling) stories. He has a pot of black coffee and a "Grampy-sized" bowl of ice cream waiting for him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/give.html or Make-A-Wish Foundation at https://wish.org/.

To Lyn´s family we send our deepest sympathy! It seems like a 100 years ago that we were all one big swim team family and Lyn was a big part of that and certainly not forgotten! He was always ready to help and that did not go unnoticed. He will be missed! Rest in Peace Lyn.
