Marcia Anne Toruño passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on September 4, 1940, in California, Marcia made Benicia her home for the past 30 years. A dedicated educator, she taught school for over 40 years in the Richmond Unified School District, spending many of those years at Pinole Middle School and Downer Middle School.
Marcia had a deep love for travel, especially to Costa Rica. In the mid-1960s, she joined the Peace Corps and served in Costa Rica, where she met her husband, Javier Toruño. She was proud of her Irish heritage and loved spending time at the Russian River at the family cabin. She also enjoyed camping, and hiking-including walking much of the Pacific Coast Trail. Passionate about politics and the world around her, Marcia was always up for a thoughtful conversation and a new adventure.
She is survived by her former husband, Javier Toruño her daughters, Patricia Eske and Gabriela Toruño; her son, Rodolfo (Jenny) Toruño; her sister, Janet Penner; her brothers, Stephen (Lori) and Phil (Julie) Grosse; her grandchildren, Journey Eske, Alessio Toruño, and Andes Toruño and her beloved dog Bailey. Marcia was preceded in death by her son, Miguel Toruño, in 2018.
Her adventurous spirit, intellect, and love for life will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew her.
Visitation will start at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 2nd followed by a vigil service at 6:00 p.m on Wednesday, July 3rd at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel.
