Margaret "Ruth" Hill, nee Simpson, of
Cuba, MO, was born on Saturday, September 2, 1939, in Cherryville, MO to John Thomas Simpson and Lillie Arnettie Simpson, nee Oxendine. She passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Phelps Health Hospital in Rolla, MO, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 14 days.
Ruth grew up and attended school in Cherryville, MO. She married Raymond Louis Baker in 1954 and to this union 5 children were born, Sue Ann, Katherine, Joyce, Stevie, and Carl. Later she moved to St. Louis with her family and began working at Welsh Baby Carriage as an assembler. She met the love of her life, Elgie Eugene Hill, and they were united in marriage on March 5, 1964 in St. Louis and to this union one child was born, Elgeana. Ruth and Elgie moved to
Cuba, MO in 1973 where they remained until their passing. She worked as a sewer for Brown Shoe, The Whistle Company, and then retired from Sew On & On in 2005. She and Elgie had owned and operated numerous businesses throughout the years such as their own restaurant and clothing store both in Bourbon, MO, a night club in Potosi, MO, and last Hills Trading Post in
Cuba, MO. Ruth had accepted the Lord and enjoyed attending church.
The couple were always together, and they were a perfect example of what true love looks like. He lovingly referred to her as "Mama." Ruth's greatest joy in life was her family. She lived to care for others, always giving of herself and was the most unselfish person. When you came to visit Ruth, no matter who you were, you could always count on three things: 1) coffee, 2) delicious food and 3) an offer to stay the night. She was always busy working on something, taking care of the yard and tending to her beautiful flowers. She was a hard worker, and she instilled that mindset in all her children. Ruth taught all of them to be good humans, work hard and love one another. At a young age she worked hard cutting cord wood and stacking it to earn money. She saved that money to buy herself a doll she really wanted. Later in life she had a doll collection that she proudly displayed.
The children have included a tribute to their mother:
To our precious Mother
Born a survivor, you were an angel there among us
always giving of yourself, always there for us,
showing us what true love means. How to work
hard for the things we want in life and
how to be a good person. We thank you and
we love you. It is now time for you to
rest mama. You will be missed but we
know we will all be with you again one day.
You enjoy those heavenly cups of coffee!
With all our love,
Sue, Kathy, Joyce, Carl, and Elgeana
The grandchildren have included a tribute to their grandmother:
To our beloved grandmother,
From the moment we came into this world
you were there for us. You loved us as though
we were your own. A steady source
of love and comfort that we knew we could always count on
Thank you, grandma, for always being there
for your understanding
and thoughtful ways. We all know what it
means to love another because of you. We patiently
wait for the day we get to be
with you again.
Love your grandbabies,
Eddie, Bill, Julie, Meredith, Shawn Andrea, Ben,
Lindsey, Brandon, Brennan, and Mariah
