Margaret (Hedges) Mumber Shallcross, of North Brunswick passed away on Sunday, January 12 at home. She was 94.
Born and raised in Fords, she has lived in North Brunswick for almost 70 years.
"Marge" graduated Woodbridge High School in 1947. She then worked as a legal secretary for a local lawyer for nine years before moving on to Parker, Remsen & Sullivan Insurance Agency. She worked there for 30 years and retired in 1986.
Marge married her first great love, Frank A. Mumber, on January 23, 1954. They enjoyed 27 years together. They were active in the New Brunswick High School community, the former German-American Club (where she served as Treasurer), and Rutgers football. Frank and Marge would travel to many different states to watch the football games with friends. Unfortunately, Frank passed away suddenly on June 15, 1981.
A few years later she met her second great love, Lawrence (Larry) Shallcross. They were married on July 19, 1986. Marge's family now expanded to include Larry's four children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Together they enjoyed family and friends, traveling and being involved in their community and church. Larry passed away on December 5, 2015.
Marge enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening, cooking, baking, trips to Atlantic City and bingo. She especially loved the friendships she had with her neighbors and many others. Marge was President of the North Brunswick Chapter of AARP (1994-1996), a member of North Brunswick Seniors Club, Sacred Heart Holy Family Church and Rosary Altar Society. When she became ill, she worried about who was going to wash and iron the altar linens and who was going to call bingo at the Senior Center. She will surely be missed by many.
Besides her two husbands, she was predeceased by her brother, Stephen Hedges, her sister, Helen Dziepak, and nephews, Richard Mumber and Robert Hedges
Surviving are her niece, Joyce Hedges, and nieces-in-law, Darlene Mumber and Harriet Hedges, Howard and Jane Shallcross, Lynn and Yasmin Shallcross, Jeffrey and Ingrid Shallcross and Donna Barnes Also surviving are numerous godchildren, grand and great- grand nieces and nephews, and grand and great-grand stepchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday,January 20th from 2 to 6 PM at the Gleason Funeral Home of North Brunswick, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 21st at 9 AM at the funeral home with Funeral Mass at 10 AM at Sacred Heart/Holy Family Parish, New Brunswick. Burial to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, New Brunswick.
