Breaux Bridge- A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, January 17, 2025 at St. Bernard Catholic Church for Marie Levie Faucheaux Sonnier, who passed away on January 7, 2025, at the age of 103.

She was a beacon of kindness in her community and a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Often called Marie or Levie, her warmth and compassion left an indelible impression on everyone she met. She will be remembered not only for her unwavering faith and service but also for her vibrant storytelling, which painted vivid portraits of her strength and resilience as a young woman. Marie lovingly kept her family strong during her husband Joseph Chester (JC)'s 21-year Navy career, enduring long separations at sea. Her love and resilience left a lasting legacy of courage and devotion.

A visitation will take place at the funeral home in Breaux Bridge on Thursday, January 16 from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will continue Friday, January 17 from 8:00 AM until services.

A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 16.

Rev. Garrett McIntyre will officiate at the funeral mass. Readers will be Erika Schultz and Alana Adams. Gift bearers will be Ophelia Trahan and Leona Schultz.

Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 1.

Marie's life was an inspiring testament to her faith, service, and generosity of spirit. As a deeply committed and loyal member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, she exemplified dedication through her active involvement in numerous church ministries, such as the Catholic Daughters and the Ladies Altar Society. Her love for teaching shone brightly in her role as a fourth-grade catechism teacher, where she nurtured young hearts and minds with the teachings of Christ and Catholic tradition.

Her service extended to role as a Eucharistic Minister, where she brought the Holy Eucharist to the sick and homebound, embodying selflessness and love. Through her longstanding participation in a Rosary group, she fervently prayed for her community and the world, offering spiritual upliftment to all who knew her.

Marie also embraced Schoenstatt's Spirituality, welcoming the traveling Shrine Statue from Germany into her home. She meditated on the mysteries of the Rosary and offered prayers of reparation for the sins of the Church and the world, demonstrating a profound commitment to her faith.

Marie's compassion extended far beyond her church. As President of the American Legion Auxiliary, she worked tirelessly to support veterans and their families, earning the prestigious Thelma Ashley Award. Additionally, she earned recognition for her artistic talents, winning First Place twice at the American Legion Auxiliary State Convention for her Prayer Book entries.

Marie's spirit of service was further evident in her work as Neighborhood Chairman for various charitable drives, including the Heart Fund, Cancer Drive, Muscular Dystrophy, and Cerebral Palsy campaigns. She tirelessly ensured that those in need had a voice and a helping hand. As a Brownie troop leader, she passed on her values of thoughtfulness, service, and leadership, shaping the next generation with care and purpose.

In her collaboration with the Home Demonstration Club, she brought joy and meaning to the lives of local citizens by teaching exercise and crochet classes, fostering connection and fulfillment within the community. Through her involvement in these organizations, Marie exemplified a remarkable dedication to community service and well-being of others, leaving an enduring legacy of warmth and generosity.

Marie's life was defined by an extraordinary devotion to her faith, family, and community. Her empathy and steadfast leadership inspired countless lives, creating ripples of goodwill that will endure. Though she will be deeply missed, the love and service she gave so freely will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her sons: Robert Neil Sonnier, Sr. and his wife, Gloria, and their children: Robert Sonnier, Jr., Christopher Sonnier, and Michael Sonnier, Ronald "Ron" James Sonnier and his wife, Cheryl, and their children: Matthew Sonnier, Erika Schultz, and Alana Adams. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Kaleb Sonnier, Andrew Sonnier, Kathryn Sonnier, Eli Sonnier, Mia Schultz, Ophelia Trahan, Leona Schultz, and Wyatt Schultz.

She is preceded in death by her husband of almost 59 years, Joseph Chester Sonnier; parents, Emilien and Uranie Castille Faucheaux; brothers, Joseph "Edwin" Faucheaux and George Faucheaux.

Pallbearers will be Robert Sonnier, Jr., Christopher Sonnier, Michael Sonnier, Matthew Sonnier, Kaleb Sonnier and Andrew Sonnier.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Neil Sonnier, Sr. and Ronald "Ron" James Sonnier.

Memorial donations may be made in Marie Levie Sonnier's name to Hospice of Acadiana's Calcutta House, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, La 70503.
