Obituary of Marie A. Weymouth
MARIE A. (BANKS) WEYMOUTH, 102, of Belfast, passed away July 17, 2025 at Deborah Lincoln House in Belfast. She was born June 21, 1923 in Liberty, Maine to Charles and Hannah Bagley Banks.
Her mother died when Marie was four years old, but she did remember her. A few years later her dad married Helen Knowlton of Freedom, and she not only helped bring them up but also taught all of them at the school in Center Montville.
When Marie was 11 years old, her dad challenged her to do his State Highway payroll, and she did it until he died unexpectedly in 1939, four months after Marie graduated from Crosby High. That was her real introduction to her bookkeeping career. After that, Marie was pretty much on her own as Helen remarried and their home was sold. She worked in Belfast and Camden until WWII, when she worked at Waltham Watch in Massachusetts, making gunnery instruments for the US Navy. While in Massachusetts, she married Arthur McLaughlin of Danforth. They had two sons, Daniel and Charles. After Arthur left the Navy and no longer had any contact with the boys, Charles was adopted by Harold and Pearl Higgins with whom he had boarded since he was a baby. Marie and Arthur were divorced by then.
In 1950 Marie married Merl Weymouth of Morrill, and they had two sons, Kenneth and Robert. Marie worked at several different businesses in Belfast, Puritan Clothing, State Sand & Gravel, Mollison's, and Journal Press. In 1967, Judson Flanagan of Viking Lumber hired her, and after a short while on Belmont Avenue, they moved to a new facility on Searsport Avenue and the business grew rapidly. As soon as he finished school, Jud's son David came to work and then Erin and Maureen, his daughters, as well. It was a busy life, but Marie really enjoyed her work there. Jud gave Merl and Marie a trip to South America, which was the experience of a lifetime, and they treasured it. They also traveled much of Maine and made one trip to Canada on their Harley. As the boys grew up and married, there were a lot of special family times; then came grandchildren and eventually a great-granddaughter and great-grandson, so they were able to enjoy them all. Rob got Marie interested in the Boston Red Sox when he was in Little League, and they made a trip to Fenway Park with his cousin Jerry with them. It was a fun time, and Marie is still an avid fan today. Marie had many interests – reading, sewing, knitting, and crocheting, all of which she still pursued until very recently. She continued walking until the very end of her life.
Merl and Marie were divorced in 1982 but continued a friendship and many family get-togethers. Over the years, Marie lived in Belfast so was able to visit with her sister and brothers, work in her gardens and walk, walk, walk! She kept herself busy and continued to work at Viking until 2008. She and her sister, Merle, were given a lovely retirement party by the Flanagan's at the Blue Goose in Northport. All their families and friends were invited, so it was a very special occasion. After all these years together are like a second family and still keep in touch. Marie worked at Viking for over 41 ½ years and was very proud of that record.
She was predeceased by her father and mother; her sister Merle Potter; her brother Richard and wife Evelyn, Wilfred and wife Marilyn, Robert and wife Edith, and by James Potter, Merle's husband; as well as her daughter-in-law Diane (Bunnell) Weymouth.
Marie is survived by her son, Daniel L. McLaughlin his wife Frances and his children, Duane and Deborah and her children Haley and Paul. Her sons, Kenneth Weymouth of Morrill, his son Adam of Morrill, and daughter Sally and husband Tyler of Belmont and their daughter Charley; and son Robert and his wife Carol (Vander Woude) Weymouth of Stetson; their sons Benjamin and wife Bobbie and their sons Thomas and Nathaniel of South China, Andrew of Stetson, and Samuel and wife Dominique and their son Henry of Bangor; as well as many dear nieces and nephews.
A time of visiting will be held from 1-2 pm on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 2 pm at Riposta Funeral Home 182 Waldo Ave, Belfast, ME 04915.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her memory to Belfast Soup Kitchen, PO Box 1153, Belfast, ME 04915 or New Hope Midcoast P.O. Box A, Rockland, Maine 04841
