Marilyn King Horne, 84, of Maysville, peacefully entered her heavenly home on Sunday, June 29 2025. She was welcomed by her husband, Gorman Horne; her children, Teresa Grice and Wayne Horne; her parents, Wilbur and Pauline King; her siblings, Frances Laura King, Fred King, Sr. and Roy King, Sr. and her beloved canine companion, Ratchet.
Her memory will be forever cherished by her children, Sheila "Lisa" Gawlowski (Rick), and Gorman Wade Horne; grandchildren, Amber Bell (Scott), Ryan Norris (Kayla), Kiersten Spurgeon (Jake), Sophia Horne, Christian Horne, Cameron Dunn, Brandon Gawlowski, Erik Gawlowski, Casey Horne (Elizabeth), Courtney Horne, and Zach Horne; 13 great-grandchildren, including Nate Norris, of the home; her furry feline, Derby and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and outlaws.
Marilyn was raised on a farm in Onslow County but left that farm life behind after eloping with the love of her life, Gorman, While Gorman worked raising hoods as a mechanic, and also raising just a little hell, Marilyn was raising their four children and all 525 of their closest friends. She later helped to raise her grandchildren, and all their closest 525 friends, becoming known as "Granny" to some by blood and all by heart. While raising half the population of Jones County, she also worked in various industries, from restaurants and retail to manufacturing. On the rare occasion that she found time for a break, she loved reading and watching old westerns on television.
Marilyn had the biggest heart and would do anything for not just the people that she loved but also for a stranger on the street. She was an excellent cook, known for serving up home cooked meals, along with an honest opinion. Marilyn may have been small in stature, but she was tough and afraid of absolutely nothing and no one. Definitely loved by many, and possibly feared by plenty, "Granny" will be missed. The family will receive friends Thursday July 3rd from 6 to 8 PM at the Sayland Funeral Home in Maysville. A funeral service will be Saturday July 5th at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with the Rev. Greg Meadows officiating.. Burial will be in Dogwood Memorial Cemetery.
