Marilyn James McMillan, known to many as "Meecie" passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025.
Born on March 4, 1952, in
Jackson, MS, Marilyn's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to her family and her deep faith. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and solid support that will inspire us all.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Francis Monroe James. Marilyn's memory will be cherished by her devoted husband of almost 55 years, Horace G. "Sunny" McMillan, Jr, her daughter Christy McMillan Odom (Mike) of Madison and her son Jordan McMillan (Somer) of Hernando, her grandchildren that were her world and she loved so dearly, Mary Blair Odom, Brady Odom, Meredith Odom, Cade McMillan, Ryker McMillan, Hartly McMillan, her future daughter in law and Brady's fiancé Camille Summerlin, her brother Greg James (Traci) of Ocean Springs, brother in law Hubert Stephen "Butch" McMillan (Teresa) and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Marilyn's life was rich and full; after graduating from Callaway high school, she embarked on a journey of higher education. She attended Mississippi State University where she received a degree in secondary education. Her teaching career began in Kosciusko Public Schools and continued through
Amarillo, TX,
Decatur, AL and 31 years with the Madison County School District. She also taught English Comp I and II at Holmes Community College. Marilyn was an incredible teacher who poured everything into her students. She went above and beyond to help each student learn all they could. She was not only a teacher, but a mother to her students, a counselor, a disciplinarian, and a friend. She left an indelible mark on countless students' lives. After retiring from the Madison County School District Marilyn and Sunny moved back to their farm in Attala County where Marilyn continued to do long term substitution with the Ethel Public School District.
Marilyn had a passion for travel. She and Sonny loved visiting Europe, especially Scotland. They also enjoyed visiting Vermont and Maine along with many other destinations together and with family. Marilyn directed a trip each year while teaching with Madison County School District to Australia and numerous times to Europe. She developed lifelong friendships with students and parents on these trips.
Marilyn's house was a testament to her love of antiques and treasures. Marilyn loved attending estate sales and garage sales all over the United States. Each piece she acquired always held a special story and reflected her warm personality.
Marilyn's gentle nature, kind spirit and beautiful smile will forever be etched in all our hearts. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother, a cherished "Meecie", a true friend to many and a woman who lived her life with grace, dignity and unwavering faith. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church Madison on December 30, 2025, from 5-7pm, visitation on December 31, 2025, at 10am followed by a memorial service at 11am, also at First Baptist Church Madison. Arrangements are under the care of Sebrell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to French Camp Academy or the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.
