Marjorie Jane Hill Joslin
Marjorie Jane Hill Joslin was born on December 21, 1933, to E. Howard Hill and Lorraine Wells Hill, just after her twin sister Marilyn. Marjorie also had a younger sister Margaret and a younger brother James Howard, who died in infancy.
Marjorie enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up on a general livestock farm near Minburn, Iowa with loving and nurturing parents. She enjoyed farm life with dogs, cats, horses, the timber, beautiful fields and the Raccoon River, small town, school, church, friends and extended family nearby. She graduated from Washington Township Consolidated High School near Minburn, Iowa in 1951.
Marjorie graduated from Iowa State College in 1955 with a B.S. in Home Economics Education. As a senior she was selected by classmates as a class officer. She graduated with a master's degree in Home Management in 1969 at Iowa State University. She remained a loyal supporter of ISU all her life. She loved watching the football and basketball games.
She married Kenneth H. Joslin in 1954. They had 3 children. Daniel Roy, Kenneth Howard and Jane Lorraine. After a few years teaching in Texas, they returned to Hillview Stock farm where she grew up to farm and raise their children. They hosted 10 Japanese in their home for a year each to learn American farming. The marriage dissolved after 25 years.
Marjorie remained on the farm to finish raising the family and later helped to care for her elderly father. After his death she moved to a townhome in West Des Moines.
Marjorie loved working with young people as a teacher to support her family. She received tremendous satisfaction seeing students learn and develop and become enthusiastic about learning at the middle and high school levels. Additionally, she coached students in various speech contests for the Iowa Science fair. She taught home economics in Waco and Pasadena, Texas. At ISU she worked as a supervising teacher for student teachers while working on her master's degree. She also taught science and home economics at Central Dallas in Minburn and at Meredith Middle school in Des Moines.
Marjorie served on the Iowa State Alumni Board of Directors and served on the Dallas County Hospital Board of Trustees. She was a member of the Minburn Methodist Church for over 50 years then later the Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. She relied on God to give her strength in life's struggles. Her understanding of the Bible grew through the ministry of Bible Study Fellowship. Marjorie was a member and served as President for ISU Home Economics Deans Advisory Board. She was a member of the Iowa State Alumni Association, PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, Questers International and the National Education Association. She taught Sunday School down through the years and took many courses on the Bible. Marjorie loved to learn and enjoyed various classes at ISU in the Collage for seniors and community offerings. She was a member of the DAR Daughters of the Revolution, Iowa Genealogy Society and Des Moines Women's Club.
Marjorie loved writing. She wrote a Minburn United Methodist church history book, and a book about the history of Washington township school and community where she lived most of her life. She wrote over thirty books on family history and vacations, and trips with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed writing and photography and combining both.
Marjorie always felt her family was the most important thing in her life and held each member close to her heart despite miles of separation. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and animals. She also loved to travel and learn about new places and people. She visited thirty countries and over one hundred National Parks and historic sites.
