Martha “Jane” DeBacker, 90, a long time resident of Jekyll Island, Georgia and more recently Cartersville, Georgia passed away peacefully on Sunday January 5th at Cartersville Crossing. She was born in Athens, Ga on August 28, 1934 and attended the University of Georgia where she was an active member of Pi Beta Phi and met her husband, Lucien. While jobs carried them across the United States, they never forgot their love of Georgia. For many years she owned a yarn shop, Jane’s Yarn Barn in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. She carried her love of knitting, crocheting and weaving with her from Pennsylvania to New Jersey to Colorado and back to Georgia. She took great pride in finding family and friends wherever she traveled; some included the Air Force Cadets she sponsored during their time at the Air Force Academy, keeping in touch with many cadets well into their adult lives. As a resident of Jekyll Island, she spent her time playing croquet at the Jekyll Island hotel, weaving the Jekyll Island tartan, playing Mahjong, and serving as a deacon at the Jekyll Island Presbyterian. For the past two years she was lovingly served by the nurses at Cartersville Crossing. She was a devoted wife and mother and took joy in her extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucien DeBacker, son Jeff DeBacker, sister Mary Frank Bray, and parents Frank and Mary Weatherford. She is survived by her sister Ann Starling; son Greg DeBacker and his wife Edna DeBacker, daughter Laura Ebersole and her husband Chris Ebersole; her grandchildren Lauren Torrance (JT), Michael Kaiser-De Backer (Ruth), John DeBacker (Darcie), Owen Ebersole, and Andrew; and her 5 great grandchildren Lucien, August, Helena, Evie, and Callie. A reception for family and friends will be Thursday, January 9th at noon at Georgia Funeral Care in Acworth, Georgia. Services will follow at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are being requested for the American Diabetes Association: https://diabetes.org/ways-to-give/memorial-gift
