MACOMB- Martin R. O'Donnell, age 73, of Macomb, NY passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at his daughter's home surrounded by love and memories. He was the son of the late Llewlyn and Nathalie (Nightengale) O'Donnell.
There will be calling hours for Marty on Friday, July 25, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. His funeral service will immediately follow at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Pleasant Lake Cemetery in Macomb. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.
Marty graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1972 and proudly served his country in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1974. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned recognition as an expert in hand grenades and a sharpshooter with the M16 rifle.
Following his military service, Marty returned home and dedicated 42 years of his life to Gouverneur Central School District as a custodian. His commitment, humor, and warm personality left a lasting impact-so much so that staff and former students still stop to share fond stories of him, in the halls of East Side.
Marty was a man of many talents and passions. He loved hunting, fishing, and carpentry and could always be found tinkering with something. He enjoyed shooting pool, throwing horseshoes, and was known for his skill (and competitive spirit!) in Texas Horseshoes. More than anything, he cherished time with his grandchildren. His witty sense of humor, sarcastic charm, and signature "Hellllloooo" will be remembered.
Marty is survived by his daughter, BOBbi Jo (Eric) Thompson, and their children Emilie (Ashton), Kylie, and Colton; his brother, Richard (Katrina) O'Donnell; and sisters Jacqueline Hays, Joanne Finton, and Jody (David) Streeter. He is also lovingly remembered by his other children: Marrissa (Tim) Benjamin, Jennifer Beaulieu, Tammy Beaulieu, Christi (Allen) Mahipat, Ryan and Todd Shampine, niece Andrea Wrobel. Additional grandchildren include Nathalie, Chris Michael, Blake, Kharma, Brandon, and Austin. As well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Melinda Shampine; brothers Llewlyn, Mark, and Michael O'Donnell; sisters Jerry Robinson, Judy Hays, Jennifer and Joyce O'Donnell; brothers-in-law James Finton and Lloyd Robinson; and his beloved grand pup, Nikko.
Marty's legacy is one of quiet service, endless humor, and deep love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed.
