Robert Martin Wacaster, affectionately known as Marty, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025 in
Andalusia, Alabama. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength, generous spirit, and steady presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Throughout his accomplished career, Marty earned wide respect in the textile industry for his deep expertise in machinery and operations. His work took him across the globe, where he was sought after for his practical knowledge and ability to solve problems few others could. Though he never sought the spotlight, his contributions were significant and enduring.
At home, Marty was the kind of man people leaned on-always ready to lend a hand, fix what was broken, or offer thoughtful advice without needing recognition.
He was married to Vickie for 22 years, and their bond was built on quiet loyalty, daily devotion, and a love that showed up, over and over again. Marty didn't just stand beside her; he walked with her, believed in her work, supported her passions, and found joy in simply being near her. Whether he was helping with hospice events, building her a greenhouse, or checking off whatever was next on her honey-do list, his love spoke through action. They talked about everything-big and small-and he was never more content than when her hand was in his. Their life together was full of laughter, purpose, and the kind of partnership that leaves no doubt: they were each other's home.
Marty was a skilled carpenter and painter who could build just about anything. He made keepsake boxes for each grandchild and took on whatever event project his family dreamed up. To that end, his favorite place was the shop-a space filled with tools, parts, and some of his favorite people. He spent hours there with family and close friends, working with his hands, sharing advice, telling stories, and talking shop. It was a place of connection, where hard work and good company came together the way he liked it.
He cherished the outdoors-especially camping by the river and sitting around a fire-and he took particular joy in making breakfast for his family whenever they were gathered, filling the house with the familiar sounds and smells of togetherness.
Marty is survived by his wife, Vickie Wacaster; his son, Wes Wacaster (Trish) of Andalusia, and grandchildren Ricky and Nicole. He is also survived by his stepchildren, who loved and respected him deeply: • Allen Cunningham (Amanda) of Andalusia and grandchildren Zac, Dawson, Makinley, and Ryker; great-grandchildren Logan, Jaxson, and Kyndell • Valerie Cunningham-Trainer (Trevor) of Birmingham and Huntsville and grandchildren Jaylyn, Amelia, Evan, and Juliana • MJ Bryan (Dave) of Birmingham and grandchildren Cady, Parker, Oliver, and Maddox; great-granddaughter Ezlynn
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.M. Wacaster and Quida Evans.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Foreman Funeral Home in Andalusia. The family will host a memorial gathering afterward at the Chantilly House, and all are invited to stop by, visit, and share memories in celebration of Marty's life.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Aveanna Hospice, with special appreciation to Gina Hicks, for the compassionate care given to Marty and our family. Having the support of so many lifelong friends during this time brought comfort and peace when we needed it most.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a
charity of your choice or that you perform an act of kindness in Marty's memory-a fitting tribute to a man who quietly and faithfully gave so much of himself to others.
Though this was not the healing we prayed for, we take comfort in knowing Marty now rests by the River of Life, under endless skies, where pain no longer reaches and peace has taken hold. Our hearts break in quiet pieces, but we are held by a love that surpasses all understanding. Rest, sweetheart. You loved us so well-and we will love you always.
