May her memory be eternal!
Maria Demetre Makarounis was born on October 8, 1935, in the village of Kandila,Arcadia,Greece, she was the fourth of five children. Her early years were rooted in close family, Orthodox tradition, and the hard-working spirit of village life, values she would carry with her across continents.
In 1952, at just 16 years old, Mary set out on a life-changing journey. Accompanied by her younger brother Kostas, she arrived at Ellis Island. Their immigration to America was made possible through the sponsorship of their beloved sister Katherine and husband Spiros Callis. Their generosity laid the foundation for Mary's new beginning, an opportunity that has never been forgotten by the family.
Mary built her life in Portland, Oregon with husband Ted Ballis. They met at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and married on September 2, 1956.
Mary worked as a seamstress at White Stag. Over time, she transitioned to being a full-time homemaker. Mary was a loving mother and a kind, generous, and compassionate friend. She was spiritual and enjoyed being part of the church community, including time in the choir and with Philoptochos. A talented cook and pastry maker, Mary helped prepare Diples, Loukoumades, and Baklava for the annual church bazaar, as well as for family and friends.
Mary found joy in a well-tended garden, a deck of cards with friends, visits to Spirit Mountain, a crowded kitchen filled with food and laughter. But her greatest joy was her family. She built a home where love was unconditional and laughter was frequent Mary was a steady presence in our lives, a quiet pillar of strength. Mary lived a full and generous life. Her time with us is complete, but her love and example remain with us always.
She leaves behind a legacy of courage, service, and deep love that lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
The Funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
