It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Mary Rebecca Gonzales, who passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born on January 26, 1942, in Sargent, Colorado, Mary spent her life devoted to her family and home in Monte Vista, Colorado. A pillar of strength and grace, she will always be remembered for her unwavering love, kindness, and the deep devotion she had to those she held dear.
Mary's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving daughter, Elaine, and son-in-law Art Armijo of Raton, New Mexico, and her son, Daryl, and daughter-in-law Corinna Garcia of Monte Vista, CO. Mary took great pride in her grandchildren Arthur Armijo Jr. and Tyler Crawley of Albuquerque, NM; Nicklaus Armijo of Las Vegas, NV; Anthony and Tayler Garcia of Monte Vista, CO; and Josh Garcia and Scott Pyzik of Boston, MA. She will be missed by her beloved cat, Savannah.
Mary's life was marked by unwavering dedication to her family. She grew up in Alamosa, where she embraced the role of caregiver not only to her beloved mother but also to her brothers. She cherished her family deeply, and her love for them remained a cornerstone of her existence. Mary was preceded in death by her cherished son, Bobby Garcia, whom she loved dearly, as well as her brothers Joe, Felix, Bob (Betty), and Manuel (Nora), and her sisters, Jennie (Sam) Pacheco and Lupita (Abe) Maes. She is also preceded in death by her parents Eufemio and Frances Gonzales.
Mary's home was always a place of comfort, laughter, and nourishment-whether through a warm meal (especially her homemade Green Chile), a listening ear, or the loving embrace she shared with everyone she met. Her generosity and compassion knew no bounds, and she touched the hearts of many in her community.
While Mary's physical presence may be gone, her spirit and the love she shared with her family will continue to guide and inspire us. We find comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her, in addition to her cats Roxy and Skyler.
Her family invites all who knew her to celebrate Mary's life and legacy. Cremation was selected and a Graveside Interment of Ashes will take place at the San Luis Valley Cemetery in Monte Vista beginning at 11:00 am on Saturday July 26, 2025. The family asks all to join in honoring the unyielding love, strength, and warmth that Mary brought to their lives. To express condolences, please visit www.mvmortuary.com
