Mary Anna Helle, 89, of Hopkinton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was born on November 13, 1935, in Dundee, the daughter of Dennis and Josephine (Sands) Malone. Mary was raised and educated in the Lamont area, graduating from Lamont High School as the class valedictorian. She also took classes at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.

On October 10, 1953, Mary was united in marriage to Roger Helle at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lamont. They had four children. Together with Roger, she was owner and publisher of the Delaware County Leader newspaper.

Mary was awarded the Iowa Newspaper Association 50 Year Award and was also proud of winning the 1949 Buchanan County Spelling Bee Contest. She enjoyed running the newspaper and writing the Tradewinds column, socializing, taking pictures and riding with Roger in the semi. She most of all enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her four children, Steven (Susan) Helle of Champaign, Illinois, Bruce (Gail) Helle, of Manchester, Angela Glaw of Cedar Rapids, and Susan (Jeremy) Derderian of Keosauqua; nine grandchildren, Samantha (Skylar) Sebens, Stephanie Helle, Jordan (Justine) Helle, Justin (Lauren) Helle, Jared Helle, Ashley Glaw, Sarah (Kevin) Sorensen, Chanelle Helle, and Brodrick (Kendall Woods) Sevart; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennise Grant of Cascade, Sherry Schaul of Manchester, and Dennis (Karol) Malone of Mesa, Arizona; special friend, Brian Ellison.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roger in 2010; two brothers, Phillip and Melvin Malone; and two brothers-in-law, Emmett Grant and Ed Schaul.
