Mary Elizabeth Johnson (Birchmeier), of New Lothrop, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Mother's Day, May 11th, 2025 at the age of 73. A visitation will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home-New Lothrop Chapel on Thursday, May 15th from 3:00 to 7:00.
Born on October 7, 1951 in Saginaw to Rolan and Joan Birchmeier, Mary spent her entire life residing in the Maple Grove and New Lothrop area. She attended St. Michael's Catholic School in Maple Grove before graduating valedictorian of her class from New Lothrop High School in 1969.
Mary is survived by her husband of over 52 years, John Johnson. They were married on July 1st, 1972. With John, she raised and poured love and care into her 2 children, Steve (Amanda) of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Sara of New Lothrop. Spending time with her grandchildren filled her with tremendous joy: Jenna, Janaya, Chalea, Logan, Ri-Ella, Braevin, Jocelyn, and Jezlyn. In September 2022, she welcomed her great-grandchild, Xena. Mary devoted her time, energy, and warmth to them every day.
Mary was blessed with four siblings: Regina (Greg) Coulter, Terry Birchmeier, Karen (Gene) Miller, and Scott (Soprinia) Birchmeier. They take comfort that Mary was able to spend Mother's Day with their mother Joan, who passed in 1975.
Mary spent over 30 years serving the children and families of New Lothrop Area Public Schools as a bus driver and administrative assistant for the Transportation and Athletic Departments. Mary touched lives throughout her community, and those who knew her cherish the time they were able to spend with her.
The family would like to thank the Twin Township Ambulance base and Hazeltown Township Fire Department for their service, comfort, and compassion.
Friends and family are invited to pay respects at McGeehan Funeral Home in New Lothrop on Thursday, May 15th from 3:00 to 7:00.
