Obituary published on Legacy.com by Apyre National Cremation Services - Port Reading on Apr. 17, 2025.
Mary Ellen Doherty, a longtime resident of Linwood, New Jersey, has passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Saturday, April 12, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 25, 1949, at Atlantic City Hospital to John (Jack) and Ruth Doherty, and was the fourth of their eight children.Mary is survived by her brother, Kevin Doherty; her daughter, Jennifer Doherty LeBright; and her granddaughters, Andie Garvin (husband Paul and daughter Sabrina Rose), Sadie Mangold, and Samantha LeBright Grizaniuk (husband Jonathan). After graduating from high school, Mary earned a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Special Education from Glassboro State College. She dedicated over 40 years to teaching, with her career culminating in her retirement from the Egg Harbor Township School District in 2014. Her passion for education was matched by her deep love for sports, where she coached and inspired many students both on and off the field. She was a NJSIAA official, referee, and umpire.Mary was also an active member of her community and a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. She was involved in numerous church activities, including volunteering her time to support bingo, office work and helping with the church's youth programs such as CCD for over 11 years. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she found joy in serving others through the church, where she also formed a cherished friendship with Father Harte.A church visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 724 Maple Ave, Linwood, NJ. A private interment will take place at a later date.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary's memory to a local charity of your choosing supporting sports and education, causes that were near and dear to her heart.
