Murray Whitfield Coulter died peacefully in Houston, Texas, on July 4, 2025. Murray was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Mr. Edward Herbert and Mrs. Estella (Prothro) Coulter. He was an Eagle Scout, who graduated from Little Rock High School, where he was the band captain and wrestling and boxing champion. He was on the football and swimming teams at Little Rock Junior College and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He earned an M.S. degree from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Microbiology from UCLA. He married Ingrid Glaesser in 1959, and they moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1963, where he became a professor of biology at Texas Tech University, until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Coulter was an avid and accomplished tennis player, active committee member and former President of the U.S. Tennis Assoc.–Texas Section and served as President of the Unitarian Universalist congregation in Lubbock. He is survived by his wife, Ingrid Coulter, his sons, Keith (Lee Ann) of Houston, Kenneth of Manhattan Beach, CA, and grandchildren, Suzanne Anderson (Scott), Brennan Coulter (Julia Bates), Katherine Coulter, Margaret Coulter, and Cameron Coulter. Memorial service will be at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, in Houston, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11AM, and contemporaneously livestreamed.
