Maurice Pendleton Hobbs, age 98, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025, with her loving daughter by her side.
Maurice was born on October 23, 1926, arriving just minutes before her twin brother, Morris. They were born in Shawanee, Tennessee, to Bedford and Lucy Wolfenbarger Pendleton, both of whom preceded her in death.
Maurice was educated in a one-room elementary school in Lee County, Virginia, and graduated from Flatwoods High School. After graduating at the age of 17, she moved to northern Ohio to work, living with an older sister and her husband. As soon as she turned 18, she obtained a job with Chase Brass, a company which had been converted for World War II efforts. She became a type of Rosie the Riveter, working to find defective artillery shells, which came down the assembly line. To miss one meant instant termination from the job. At the end of the war, all the women were let go to give the jobs to the returning servicemen. At that time, Maurice returned to Lee County, Virginia, to care for her ill mother.
On September 26, 1949, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, she married Earl Hobbs, Jr. Her marriage to a lineman saw them move 31 times in seven years before moving to Brownstown in October, 1956. Because they liked the community so much, the couple chose to start their line construction company there. In the early years, Maurice kept the books for their Line Contracting Company, and she quickly became part of the fabric of life in Brownstown.
Maurice joined Brownstown First Baptist Church and, along with other positions, served as church treasurer for 25 years. She was the oldest living member of the church at the time of her death.
She was a longtime member of Kappa Kappa Kappa, joining in 1969, and serving as chairman of the pecan sales for many years. Each year the Hobbs garage was packed full of boxes of Georgia pecans! Maurice was also a charter member of Hickory Hills Golf Club, winning the women's summer league several times. In addition, she and her husband sponsored women's bowling teams for many years. Always busy, she preferred to work behind the scenes, never needing attention or accolades.
Maurice loved the Brownstown community. She was an avid fan of Brownstown Central Schools in all their endeavors. She followed the high school sports teams to both home and away games for many, many years. She truly believed there was no better place to live than Brownstown, and that there were no better schools than Brownstown Central schools. She was always happy to help in her daughter's classrooms or extracurricular activities, especially altering the cheerleaders' uniforms. She never missed an opportunity to support her Braves!
When Maurice wasn't busy with her other activities, she enjoyed sewing and handiwork. She was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed needlepoint, quilting, and ceramics. She often entered handiwork in the county fair competitions. She was a perfectionist in all she did.
Traveling was another of Maurice's hobbies, particularly enjoying trips to Europe and Alaska. She also liked watching golf on television, and doing crossword and Find a Word puzzles, as well as Sudoku. In addition, she particularly loved cheering on her beloved Kentucky Wildcats when they played, although they made her nervous!
Maurice was a regular at Brock's Restaurant until its closing, and she enjoyed the camaraderie of the regulars.
Maurice is survived by one daughter, Linda (Rick) LaCour of Madison; one grandson, Gunner (Melanie) LaCour of East Berne, New York; one granddaughter, Lucy (Logan) Higgins of Madison; three great-grandchildren: Lily LaCour, Tripp LaCour, and Odette Higgins; sisters-in-law: Louise Pendleton of Jonesville, Virginia, Susan Pendleton of Lancaster, Ohio, Sue Hobbs (Ed) Richie of Florence, Kentucky, Carolyn Hobbs of Dugger, Indiana, and Betty Hobbs Marcum of Brandenburg, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.
Maurice is preceded in death by her parents; twin brother, Morris; six other brothers: Monroe, Virgus, Jack, Charles, Bill, and Jim; and five sisters: twins, Jeannette and Geneva, Bonnie, Virginia, and Estelle.
