In the mid 1950's his family moved from Mora, NM to Longmont, CO. There he met his wife to be, Anita Archuleta. They were married on July 28, 1956 at St John's Catholic Church, Longmont, CO.
During their marriage they lived in Littleton, Johnstown, Mead and finally Longmont. They had 2 children Linda Jean Martinez and Anthony Martinez. When Anita passed away on April 16, 2009 they had been married 52 years.
Preceded in death are his 3 sisters Natividad (Tive) Martinez, Emma Duran and Bernice Romero and his 1 brother, Fred Martinez.
He has 2 surviving sisters Helen Vaca and Mary Ruiz (Manuel), 2 surviving brothers Leo Martinez (Angie) and Leonard Martinez (Ana)
He has 7 grandkids, Miranda Martinez, Anthony Martinez, Vanessa Martinez, Johnny Medina (Lorena), Sandra Medina, Daniel Medina (Sheena) and Gabe Medina. He has 19 great-grandkids and 3 great-great granddaughters and this summer he would have had 2 great-great grandsons.
He also has numerous nieces and nephews.
He worked as a farm laborer in his early years, a short time at Western Foundaries and retired from Seedex a subsidiary of Great Western Sugary Factory in 1990. He spent his summer days working on his yard, which was his pride and joy. When not working on his lawn him and Anita would enjoy going to garage sales. His biggest interest was to watch wrestling on television. Years ago he would take his son Tony his brother in law Tony Archuleta and a very good friend Kenny Small and drive down to the Denver Coliseum to watch live wrestling matches. He would get so nervous watching wrestling, his right leg wouldn't stop shaking. He loved going to New Mexico to Chimayo to visit El Santuario. That was our family vacation for many years. In his later years his son Tony would take him on car rides. The car rides included going up to Trail Ridge and just driving around in the mountains. In 2010 we (Juan, Linda, Max and Tony) went to Las Vegas, NV while there we drove down to Los Angeles, CA to see the ocean. It was his first time seeing the ocean and he so loved it. He also enjoyed going to Las Vegas, NM to the 4th of July fiestas. They have local NM bands play music during the day and night. And there was when he saw for the first time Al Hurricane, the king of New Mexico music and his son Al Hurricane Jr perform. He was all smiles. A few years later we went on a road trip to Wyoming with him and Tony. He recognized the roads and towns we were driving through. He traveled those roads when planting and harvesting beets for Great Western sugar factory. He had said he thought he would never see those towns or roads again. It was nice to hear his memories when working in those towns. And he looked forward to accompany Tony and Kenny for their Sunday breakfast. As well spending time with all his family.
