It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Melba Jean Horton Pruitt, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who left this world on June 29, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on March 2, 1935, in Many, Louisiana, Melba was a radiant presence in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Melba was the cherished daughter of Louis Horton and Mary Oxley, who instilled in her the values of hard work and faithfulness that would guide her throughout her life. She dedicated over 50 wonderful years to her husband, James Eugene Pruitt, creating a loving home filled with warmth, laughter, and a deep faith in God. Melba's life was a testament to devotion as she tirelessly worked to ensure her children had the best opportunities, often going above and beyond to create a nurturing environment for them.
Her talents knew no bounds; Melba was a fabulous seamstress renowned for crafting beautiful dresses for little girls that looked as if they had been purchased in a store. She took pride in making clothes for her children that were not only functional but also a joy to wear. Melba's love for her family was evident in her commitment to preparing three home-cooked meals daily, ensuring her family gathered at the table -a custom that fostered connection and togetherness. Her home was always a sanctuary of cleanliness and order; beds were never left unmade, and clothes were always freshly ironed.
Throughout her life, Melba maintained an unwavering faith. She lived for God and instilled in her family a profound understanding of the teachings of Jesus. Her greatest desire was for her children and grandchildren to know the truth of God's Word, emphasizing the importance of being washed in His blood through baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Melba imparted a legacy of faith, teaching her family to "buy the truth and sell it not," a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
As time passed, Melba's spirit remained strong. In her last days, she required little assistance, showcasing her mental acuity and assertiveness, never hesitating to express her wishes. She fought a good fight, finished her course, and now rests in the comfort of knowing she will receive a crown of righteousness.
Melba is preceded in death by her loving husband, James Eugene Pruitt; her beloved daughter, Glenda Teasley; her sons-in-law, Cary Fiscus and Randall Teasley; her parents, Louis Horton and Mary Oxley; her sisters and brothers, Estelle Burns, Dorothy Sanders, Ivy Lee Horton, Alvie Horton, Willis Muriel Horton, Elsie Clark, Lucille Dixon, Willard Horton, and Billy Horton.
She is survived by her daughters: Linda Sue Fiscus of Mansfield, Louisiana; Connie Jo Beeks and her husband, Walter, of Arkansas; Brenda Gail Hilton and her husband, Bobby, of Leesville, Louisiana; and Paula Ann Engeldinger and her husband, Kevin, of Deridder, Louisiana. Melba's legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Sherry, Lisa, James, Rachel, Lori, Janet, Debbie, Joseph, Brendan, Brittany, Amber, and Blaise, along with fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry the love and teachings she so generously shared.
Melba is also survived by her brothers, Johnny Horton and his wife, Shirley, of Leesville, Louisiana, and Cecil Horton and his wife, Lois, of Crosby, Texas, as well as her sister, Miriam Eason, of Many, Louisiana.
A celebration of Melba's life will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Anacoco Pentecostal Church in Anacoco, Louisiana, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mitchell Cemetery in Anacoco, Louisiana.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the time of service at Anacoco Pentecostal Church.
