Melvin 'Smitty' D. Smith
July 21, 1940 - July 5, 2025
Melvin 'Smitty' D. Smith, 84, of Sugar Grove, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025 surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. He was born on July 21, 1940 in Aurora, IL., the son of the late Nicholas and Opal 'Roberta' (Whitt) Smith.
Smitty was a proud veteran, serving four and a half years in the U.S. Navy.
Smitty was an Illinois State Champion in archery and traveled many places to compete individually and as a team with his wife, Caye. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to boat, fish, hunt and spend time with family. In his younger adult years, Smitty enjoyed racing stock cars with his younger brother, Ron, at Sycamore Speedway.
Smitty is survived by his children, Mike (Becky) Smith, Caren Olvera, Doug (Kim) Smith, Cyndi (John) Kochan and Conni Van Horn; his grandchildren, DJ, Lynn, Sean, Travis, Megan, Jacob, Callie, Josephine, Anibal, Tanner and Katrina, as well as many great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Covington; sister-in-law, Paula Smith; and his brother, Nicholas (Kris) Smith.
Smitty has been reunited in heaven with late wife, Caye (Briggs) Smith; his parents, Nicholas and Roberta Smith; and brother, Ronald Smith.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 10 A.M. until the service hour of 1 P.M. at the Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove, IL. 60554. Interment will be at River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Veterans Care Charity or the COPD Foundation in memory of Smitty's courageous battle with the chronic illness.
