Obituary published on Legacy.com by Durfee Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Fair Haven on Jun. 25, 2025.
Michael Louis Austin, Ph.D., a proud native of Boston (go Red Soxs!) and a cherished longtime resident of Rutland and Castleton, Vermont, peacefully passed away on the evening of June 23, 2025, at the age of 82. He grew up in Milton, MA, and attended Mount Carmel College Seminary in Niagara Falls -carrying with him the heartfelt lesson that "love is all around."
Teaching was his greatest passion. Over more than four decades, countless students learned to love English, Public Speaking, and History in his college courses at St. Joseph's and Castleton State University. He was featured multiple times as "Favorite Teacher" in the college yearbooks and was warmly greeted in town by the kind words of former students wherever he went.
As a former president of the Vermont Association of English, he enhanced the teaching and learning of English language arts across Vermont. He dedicated many years to serving on the executive board and as the President of the New England Association of Teachers of English (NEATE) to support the growth and development of English teachers. He received the Charles Swain Award for outstanding contributions to the profession of education, and never missed a conference and eagerly catching up with lifelong friends and colleagues.
A professor at heart with history as his true passion, he could effortlessly recite facts from any era and captivate audiences with stories about historical figures. He served as Director of the Teaching American History Project at Castleton State College, participating in and directing over 25 grants, and also served as President of the Vermont Alliance of Social Studies. Additionally, he served as Rutland City Democrat Chair and authored "Stories from Vermont's Marble Valley." He earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of New Hampshire.
Family was always a central part of his life. He loved his daughters dearly and never missed chaperoning their school field trips-whether it was exploring the Boston Aquarium or visiting Billings Farm. As a proud grandfather, he smiled widely at his newest grandchild, cheered loudly at dance recitals, and even rented a colonial costume (and perfected an authentic accent) to help out as a historical volunteer. A fan of local theater, he directed several children's productions and acted in several stage plays.
Mike was among the first to embrace technology, proudly owning the first-generation Mac. He enjoyed cycling, especially trips to the farmer's market. He never forgot his Irish roots, particularly on his favorite day, St. Patrick's Day.
He was preceded in death by his mother, AnnaMae Coen from Ballyhaunis, Ireland, and his father, John Louis Austin from Belchertown, MA. His brother Paul Austin, who would visit from the farm during holidays, and his sister Mary Austin Ahearn, also hold loving memories. Mike is survived by his daughter Kerry Austin-Smith (and husband Eric Smith), grandchildren Zac, Hannah, and Amanda Smith, and by his daughter Mollyanne Austin (and partner Jordan Reed), and grandson Apollo. The family sincerely appreciates the ongoing support from the parishioners of St. Luke's in
Fair Haven, VT.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m on June 28th St. Luke's Church, North Main St,
Fair Haven, VT.
In lieu of flowers, please hug your people and support Meals on Wheels of Rutland or Rutland County Humane Society.
