Obituary for Michael John Medders, Sr.
Michael John Medders, Sr., a devoted husband, loving father, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family. Born in Cobb County, Georgia, Mike was raised in Dublin, where he graduated from East Laurens High School. He later settled in Statesboro, where he built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and love for others. Mike spent his career in the wholesale and retail grocery industry. He was known for his strong work ethic and his easy, welcoming nature-and as all would agree, Mike truly never met a stranger. His kindness, generosity, and sincere interest in people left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He was ordained as a deacon at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Vidalia, Georgia, and later served faithfully at Fletcher Baptist Church of Statesboro. He later became a member of First Baptist Church of Statesboro where he served in different capacities. He was also active in the ministry of Gideons International, sharing the hope and truth of God's Word wherever he could until he became ill. Mike's faith in Christ was the foundation of his life, and he lived it out daily with humility, grace, and compassion. In his spare time, Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing golf-especially when surrounded by friends and family. Whether out in nature or in conversation, he brought joy, laughter, and warmth wherever he went.
Mike's greatest joy was his family. His love was unwavering and evident in every part of his life-he was a constant source of strength, encouragement, and unconditional love.
He leaves behind, his loving wife of almost 63 years, Janie Marlow Medders of Statesboro, GA; his daughter, Michelle Medders Rushing (Mark Rushing) of Statesboro, GA; his daughter-in-law, Leigh Rogers Medders, wife of his son, the late Michael John Medders, Jr. of Buena Vista, GA; his cherished grandchildren: Shannon Nicole Rushing of Statesboro, GA, Christopher Elliott Rushing, of Statesboro, GA, Michael John Medders III "Trip" of Atlanta, GA, Emily Frances "Emmy" Medders of Atlanta, GA, Thomas Benson Hobbs Medders "Bense" of Buena Vista, GA; his first and only Great-grandchild, Aizen Ezekiel Sewell; his sister, Janice McGinnis, and several nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Medders and Eva Medders, and by his beloved son, Michael John Medders, Jr.
Michael John Medders, Sr. was a man of deep faith, great character, and a truly generous heart. His legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Flowers are accepted by the family, or contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Statesboro, Pruitt Health Hospice of Swainsboro, the Alzheimer's Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 11th at 10:00am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am
