Michael Timothy Thomas, 67 Years Old, of Vergennes died on Monday, June 30th at the University of Vermont Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on May 24th, 1958, in North Adams, Massachusetts, the son of Clifton and Constance Hurlbut Thomas. He was a graduate of Drury High School, class of 1976. On August 24th, 1984, he was married at St. Francis in North Adams, Massachusetts to Cheryl Ann Guillotte.
Known for his "cheshire cat" smile, quick-wit humor, animated stories, and larger than life heart, Mike left a lasting impression on all those lucky enough to meet him.
Mike has 33 years dedicated to law enforcement, working for several police departments throughout his career. He started with the Stamford Police Department in Southern Vermont and later moved to the University of Vermont Police Services where he became a Patrol Sergeant. He joined the Shelburne Police Department part-time, first as a Patrol Officer, and later moved to full-time, eventually becoming Lieutenant. Mike was pinned as Shelburne's beloved Chief in 2022.
Outside of work Mike was a devoted husband, caring father, loving son, protective brother, reliable friend, and passionate animal lover. Mike took pride in family, work, and advocating for rescue dogs.
He is survived and dearly missed by his loving wife Cheryl of nearly 41 years; and his children, Shannon & Jeremy, Majken & Josh, and Derek & Amy. Forever cherished and remembered by his six grandchildren, Logan & Jayshia, Emelia, Michael Luke, Ariya, Lennon, and Nori. Siblings; Sonya & John, Karen, and Shelly & Tim. His memory will be cherished by extended family: Ashley Smith and the Guillotte sisters; JessicaAnne, Charlene, and Vivian & Louis.
Affectionately known as "Uncle Mike", his memory lives on with his nieces and nephews; Ryan & Erin, Nicole, Jonelle & Brian, Danielle & Ryan, Tyler, Marisa, and Makenzie. On his wife's side: Dayshawn, Eugenio, Louis, and Vontez. Great nieces and nephews; Makayla & Joshua, Hanna, Reagan, Lillianna & Alex, Dayton, Addison, Harper, Scarlett, and Emerson. Great great nephews Ahzani and Giovanni.
Mike was predeceased by his father, Clifton, his mother, Constance, his brother, Stephen, and his nephew, Kiejuan. He was also predeceased by his in-laws Joseph & Dorothy.
Calling Hours to which the public is invited will be held on Tuesday, July 8th from 4pm to 8pm at Saint Jude Church 10759 Rte 116 Hinesburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Jude Church on Wednesday, July 9th at 11am. There will not be a procession to the cemetery. Immediately following the Mass there will be reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Potter's Angels Rescue and/or Passion 4 Paws.
