Michael West Obituary

Michael "Mike" E. West, 80, of Benton passed away Sunday at his home. His devoted wife of 55
years, Sharon, and loving daughter, Melinda were by his side. He was born January 19, 1945 in
Pine Bluff to the late, Martin and Alma Wynn West.
Mike enjoyed being the manager of Grider Field in Pine Bluff where he was able to earn his
pilot's license before retiring. He was so proud of his girls. He taught Cindy how to drive at the
airport, and took her fishing and to flea markets. He took Melinda on airport convention trips
and was always her protector.
Mike was a charter member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Star City, a Gideon, and a
former member of the Arkansas Army National Guard. He was also a member of the Dixie Car
Club in Benton. He loved Mustangs,, old gas pumps, and antiques. Mike also enjoyed being a
Watchdog at his grandchildren's elementary school, and meeting with the Benton McDonald's
coffee crew in the mornings. He also made a great Santa for his beloved Marty and Mallory.
Survivors include his wife Sharon, of Benton, two daughters, Melinda Shelton (Bart) of Benton,
Cindy Purifoy (Jason) of Chidester, two sisters that could always put a smile on his face, Romona
Weatherford (Lynn) of Dumas and Regenia Barrett (Randy) of Star City. He is also survived by a
grandson, Michael "Marty" Shelton who was always Poppy's buddy and a granddaughter,
Mallory Shelton whom Poppy bought a red mustang for when she was 5 years old. He is also
survived by many nieces and nephews.
As Mike battled many illnesses the last ten years of his life, his wife Sharon never left his side.
Most of all when he was sick and in the hospital, or anywhere, Mike loved telling others about
his love for Jesus.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 1:00 PM until the start of the funeral service at
2:00 PM at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Star City with Bro. Tim Forman, Bro. Clif
Springer, and Randy Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Leek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason
Barrett, Jonathan Barrett, Shane Weatherford, Michael "Marty" Shelton, Jason Purifoy, and
Bart Shelton. Memorials may be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church, Building Fund, 209
