Monica Cortez Obituary

Monica Cardiel Cortez went to her heavenly home at the age of 35 on July 24, 2025 after losing her battle to Stage 3 triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) while surrounded by her loved ones. Monica is survived by her husband Ivan Cardiel, her three beautiful daughters: Ximena Isabelle, Yaneli Sofia and Xitlalic Victoria, her sisters Maria Guadalupe Carranza and Elizabeth Cortez, and her parents Magdalena and Roman Cortez. Monica was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all of those whose lives were touched by her. We ask that you remember her not for the way her life ended, but for the way she lived her life. Monica was born on June 15, 1990, in Klamath Falls, Oregon and spent her early life in a small town in northern California, named Tulelake. Monica was very involved in her community and enjoyed staying engaged with extra curriculum activities. While in high school, she volunteered her time in an ambulance when she considered a career as a nurse. She also won 1st place with her pig at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair while participating in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and was named Miss Tulelake in 2007. She graduated high school in 2008 and took on a new adventure at Sacramento State University where she met Ivan. Some of her accomplishments include joining Sigma Omega Nu Latina Interest Sorority, Inc., working at the State Capitol as a legislative assistant for Assembly member Rudy Salas, becoming Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) president for the university's student government from 2012-2013 and representing Sac State as a member of the Cal State Student Association (CSSA), participating and placing 2nd place in the Reina Fiestas Patrias Pageant and graduating with her Bachelor of Arts in Government/Journalism in the Fall of 2013. After graduation, Monica continued to be engaged in her community by becoming a member of Hornets Policy & Politics Alumni (HPPA). Moreover, she had a successful career as a government relations director for CGI, a global Information Technology (IT) company for eight years. During which time, Monica married Ivan on July 16, 2016 and created a family that eventually included their three beautiful daughters. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, a good karaoke night, spending time with loved ones and had a great passion for dancing. Those who knew Monica can remember her for her wonderful and contagious smile that lit up any room. She was a strong woman always looking out for her loved ones, where no obstacle was too big. Monica will forever be loved and be in our hearts as she watches over us from heaven. Services as follows: Viewing will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe on 8/6/25 from 4pm-7pm. A Catholic Mass will also be said in her honor on 8/7/25 @ 11:30am at Our Lady of Guadalupe church followed by burial at Shiloh District Cemetery. (ASI) para el gobierno estudiantil de la universidad del 2012-2013 y representando a Sac State como miembro de la Asociación de Estudiantes de Cal State (CSSA), participó y tomó el segundo lugar en el reinado de Reina Fiestas Patrias y se graduó con un bachillerato de arte en Gobierno y periodismo el el otoño del 2013. Después de su graduación, Monica continuó involucrada en su comunidad al hacerse miembro de los Hornets Policy & Politics Alumni (HPPA). Además, tuvo una carrera exitosa como directora en relaciones gubernamentales para CGI una compañía global de información tecnológica (IT) ocho años. Durante ese tiempo contrajo matrimonio con Ivan el 16 de julio del 2016 y crearon una hermosa familia que eventualmente incluyó a sus tres hermosas hijas. En su tiempo libre le gustaba cocinar, una buena noche de karaoke, pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos y tenia una gran pasión por el baile. Aquel que conoció a Monica podrá recordarla por su hermosa y contagiosa sonrisa que alumbraba cualquier lugar. Era una mujer fuerte, siempre cuidando de sus seres queridos y ningún obstáculo era demasiado grande para ella. Monica será siempre amada y estará por siempre en nuestros corazones mientras nos cuida desde el cielo. Información de los servicios a continuación: El velorio se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe el 6 de agosto, 2025 de 4pm-7pm. Una misa católica se celebrará en su honor el 7 de agosto 2025 a las 11:30am en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe seguido por su entierro en el cementerio Shiloh District Cemetery. Una celebración de vida se llevará a cabo después en el centro Mary Agatha Furth de 3pm-10pm.
