Monique Alice Melanson (94 years young) peacefully passed away at her home in Flushing, Michigan, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Monique was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be deeply mourned and missed by all who knew and loved her.
Monique was born on July 9, 1931, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Lorenzo and Clairina (Vallee) Lehoux. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1949. On May 20, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Flint, Michigan, Monique married the love of her life, Edward A. Melanson. She managed her time supporting her husband, raising her family, and running a household. Later, she entered the workforce and worked as a cook at Flushing High School, where she enjoyed socializing with staff and students. She retired after 15 years to spend more time traveling with her husband and enjoying her grandchildren.
Monique was a longtime member of St. Robert Catholic Church. She was active in water aerobics at the YMCA and loved listening to music, especially tunes from the 1950s and 1960s. An avid reader, she spent many hours at the Flushing Library choosing books for the week. She also took great pride in keeping her home comfortable and her yard and pool meticulously neat. She instilled that pride in her children from a young age. If Mom worked out in the yard, you would find her children doing the same. In her younger years, Monique enjoyed camping trips with her family, including many long weekends at Higgins Lake and Petoskey, where they would swim, fish, boat, play cards, and create lasting memories. For over 25 years, Monique gathered her family every Saturday night to play "Tiles" (Dominoes).
Left to cherish her memories are her seven children: Bernard (Donna) Melanson of Blue Eye, MO, Morris Melanson of Flushing, MI, Annette Miller of Flushing, MI, Michael (Cindy) of Wimberley, TX, Teresa (Mark) Farmer of Flushing, MI, Janice Espiritu of North Highlands, CA, and Elene (Kurt) Cole of Eagle River, AK. She is also survived by grandchildren: Jeffrey (Kim), Scott (Elizabeth), Adam (Kayla), Christopher (Heather), Erica (Joe), Kristyn (Chris), Colin, Garrett (Karen), Allen (Brad), Monica (Jon), Carrie (Michael), Kristin (John), Samantha (Aaron), and Zachary; and great-grandchildren: Gunner, Emmet, Adelyn, India, Julian, Josiah, Eddie, Soraya, and Amira; sister and brother-in-law: Janet (Mike) Manzardo; sister-in-law: Nancy Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Monique is now happily reunited with her husband of 56 years, Edward A. Melanson; their son, Kenneth Melanson; parents, Lorenzo and Clairina Lehoux; son-in-law, Craig Miller; sister, Lorraine (Earl) Crist; brothers, Andre (Betty) Lehoux, and Paul (Margaret) Lehoux; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward Melanson and Aurora (Bouchette); and several other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
At the request of Monique and her family, the cremation has been completed, and a "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date. A private family inurnment and committal prayers will take place at St. Robert Catholic Cemetery in Flushing, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express sympathy may consider making a memorial donation to the "Flushing Christian Outreach Center." Arrangements have been entrusted to the Rossell Funeral Home www.rossellfh.com.
In the words of Saint John Chrysostom:
"She whom we have loved and lost is no longer where she was before:
She is now wherever we are."
