Mortimer J Godfrey
Obituary – July 24, 2025
It is with a heavy heart we share the passing of Mortimer J. Godfrey, at the age of ninety-two, after a life well lived.
He was born in 1933 to Catherine and Patrick Godfrey and raised in the Bronx, the oldest of 6 Mort, Dan, Patch, Con, Mary Ellen, and Pinky, (Sr. Catherine OSB). A fun-loving storytelling family.
Mort served in the Korean War in communications on submarines based in Norfolk VA. He celebrated his service on an Honor Guard trip to DC. After the war he joined the New York Daily News as a printing apprentice, eventually becoming Manager of the 'night side' production operation to ensure the paper 'got out'. He loved his 40 years at 'the News' where his three brothers worked as well.
Upon retiring, he volunteered at Lawrence Hospital, Meals on Wheels and as an usher at St Joseph's Church in Bronxville.
Mort is survived by his wife Mary of 69 years. He was the proud father of his daughters Kathleen Parker (Jonathan) and the late Maureen. Loving Papa to Ryan Parker (Nichole) and Mackenzie Karagianis (Evan).
He will be remembered for his storytelling, jokes, love of the beach and swimming, reading and history and overall curiosity. He will be missed walking around Bronxville and hanging with friends at Park Place Bagel nursing his one cup of tea and egg sandwich!
