Mr. Nelson Bouknight Obituary
A loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Nelson Bouknight was born on May 26, 1946, to the late Bessie May Bouknight and Charlie Caldwell and lovingly raised by Nathaniel Bouknight, Sr. He departed this earthly life to transition to eternal rest with our Heavenly Father on July 15, 2025.
Nelson was educated in the Fairfield County Schools and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1964. After graduation, he began working as a brick mason and later retired from Dunn Construction in Hartford, Connecticut.
In 2013, Nelson returned home to South Carolina. He became a devoted member of Wayman AME (now Wayman Chapel Church), where he served actively in the male choir. He was especially known for leading the beloved "Robin Song" (Everybody Ought to Praise His Name).
Nelson was a fun-loving spirit with a magnetic personality that lit up any room. He had a deep love for dogs, fishing, and cooking. He was known for his famous Red Horse Bread and homemade potato salad. If you ever wanted to see Nelson fired up, just mention 'store-bought' potato salad. He believed in homemade goodness and didn't mind recruiting as many hands as needed to peel potatoes. Nelson was known for his sharp sense of humor. He could turn even the dullest moment into something to laugh about. He loved telling stories especially those that ended in laughter-and never missed an opportunity to joke around with family or friends.
Nelson had a way of making people feel seen and welcomed, no matter their age or background. Whether he was driving his power chair around town, singing at his senior community functions, or just enjoying a good meal, Nelson brought joy and laughter wherever he went. His heart was big, his smile was contagious, and his presence was unforgettable. He gave freely, loved deeply, and lived fully.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Torri Henderson and Tangee (Garry) Woodard; one son, Tyrone Armstrong, one brother, James (Daisy) Bouknight; six sisters, Bettye Joe Dorsey, Carrie (Sammie) Samuels, Rosa (Keith) Bouknight, Yvonne Bouknight, Wanda (Marlin) Bouknight, and Crystal Corley ; three granddaughters, Marlaya Henderson-Bates, Charity Woodard, and Chanelle Woodard; two great-grandsons, DeAndre Harrison Jr. and Hayden Hodge. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends that will miss him dearly.
Nelson was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Versha Tornice McCants, with whom we believe he is now joyfully reunited in Heaven. He also joins his two brothers, Nathaniel Bouknight Jr. and Charles Bouknight; and four sisters, Beverly Smith, Addie Singleton, Yvette Bouknight, and Dorothy Bouknight. What a joyous reunion this must be.
Services for Mr. Nelson Bouknight will be Tuesday 11:00 AM July 22, 2025 @ Wayman Chapel Church with burial @ Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday July 21, 2025 from 2 pm to 6 pm @ Russell-McCutchen Funeral, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro SC 29180.
