Nelson was born on July 26, 1949, in Catskill, N.Y. He was the son of the late Nelson E Higgins Sr and Gladys Burghardt. Besides his parents, Nelson was predeceased by his brother George Higgins and sister Joanne Whittaker.
He is survived by his wife Joanne Higgins; sons Nelson Higgins III (Melissa) and Jason Higgins (Lana); and his grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew, Victoria and Nicholas.
Nelson served in the United States Army from 1969-1972 with the 27th/60th Jungle Eaters Land Clearing Company in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Germany.
Nelson was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections for 33 years as a Plant Utility Engineer.
Per his wishes, services will be private for his family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.C. Brady's Sons Funeral Home in Coxsackie.

Many years and miles has kept us from seeing you all ,we have kept up with you all through Mom and Dad and feel the loss as if we were there .Much love and prayers to you for the many great memories you and your family added to my upbringing For Nelson his sickness is over and we pray you all heal from your loss and hold his memory close .Jerry
