Paul J. Benoit, a revered educator, devout community servant, and cherished family man, passed away on July 6, 2025, at the age of 98, one day after his birthday. Paul was born July 5th, 1927, in
Leominster, MA, the son of Isidore and Blanche (Pinard) Benoit, and lived in Leominster most of his life. Paul's life was a testament to the power of education, faith, and kindness.
Paul was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mildred (Mitchell) Benoit in 2009. He leaves behind a legacy through his children, Michelle Cotton and her husband Rob of Blanchard, OK, Jacqueline Benoit of Spencer, and son Paul Benoit and his wife Shannon of Lancaster. His memory will be further cherished by his six grandchildren, Chad and his wife Madison, Shannon, and Sean Cotton, and Hannah, Lilliana, and Ryan Benoit, who will continue to be guided by the wisdom and love he imparted.
An alumnus of St. Bernard's High School and Becker Junior College in Worcester, Paul's pursuit of knowledge was unrelenting. He attended Epiphany Apostolic College in Newburg, New York, and went on to earn a B.S. from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. His academic journey led him to Villanova University, where he received an M.A. and was a proud member of the Caritas Society. Paul's commitment to education saw him further his graduate studies at an impressive array of institutions, including Temple University, Rutgers University, Boston College, Fitchburg State, and Assumption. His scholarly endeavors were recognized with a co-foundation fellowship to Harwich College in Oneonta, New York, and Yale University. He was also a recipient of a National Defense Act Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts and a Lyndon Baines Johnson Fellowship, which allowed him to serve in Congressman Drinan's office in Washington, DC.
Paul's professional life was marked by a 34-year tenure as a teacher in schools across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with his final 25 years dedicated to the students at Leominster High School. In addition to his full-time role, he served as an adjunct professor at Fitchburg State College, where he continued to inspire and shape the minds of young adults.
His service extended beyond the classroom, as Paul was an active participant in local Scouting and a veteran of World War II, having honorably served in the US Navy as a Yeoman Third Class. His commitment to his fellow veterans was evident in his involvement as a charter member of the Leominster and National Amvets, and his service as Chaplain for AMVETS POST #38.
Paul's passion for history led him to the Leominster Historical Society, where he held various roles including Curator, Treasurer, President, and Trustee since 1964. His faith was central to his life, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher at St Leo's Church, and as a member of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society of St Leo's Parish.
Described by those who knew him as intelligent, faith-filled, and kind, Paul J. Benoit's life was one of purpose and impact. His dedication to education, love for his family, and service to his community will be remembered and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. As we bid farewell to Paul, we reflect on the profound legacy he leaves behind-a legacy of unwavering commitment to the betterment of others and an example of a life well-lived.
Paul`s funeral will be held on Saturday, July 12th from Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West St. Leominster with a funeral Mass at 10am at St. Leo Church, 108 Main St. Leominster. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours in the funeral home are Friday, July 11th from 5 ~ 7pm.
