July 23, 1952, Paul Stephen McVey was born at Yocom Hospital in Chariton, IA to Raymond and Eula McVey. Paul was the "Post Script" to his large family, his parents having had eight children before him.
Paul was called to his heavenly home on January 18, 2025, just 6 1/2 hours after his sister Peggy also went to be with the Lord. Several in the family have remarked that it was like she was saying something like "Come on, Paul. Come with me. It's time to go."
Paul lived life with few complaints and, almost all of the time, with a BIG smile on his face! Even when he was upset, Paul would respond to a little joking and that big smile would be right back.
Paul never met a stranger, introducing himself to anyone he came in contact with. "Hi, my name is Paul" putting his hand out for a handshake.
Paul loved his life of freedom on the farm...following his Dad around; playing with his dogs, especially Sport and Skippy; the companionship of his sister, Peggy, who was three years older and other siblings who were still at home.
Paul attended different classes over the years, but his mind soaked in large amount from the things he watched on TV, such as Wild Kingdom, Wishbone, PBS, game shows, etc.
Paul worked at the TENCO workshop for many years where he worked on several different contracted jobs for different companies but probably his favorite job was working in can redemption. He was especially proud when he would bring home a paycheck (as little as it would be at times) and offer to buy you a "steak." Later, Paul enjoyed his time with Mosaic and then a short time with Optimae Life Services before he became ill.
After Paul's parents passed away in 1987, Paul went to live with his sister and brother in law, Phyllis and Paul Chilton. He was able to live out his life on the family homestead and was cared for with much love and affection. Though Paul lived with Phyllis and Paul, he would enjoy traveling from Barron,WI to Omaha, NE to Dewitt, IA and even Santa Rosa, CA to visit each sibling and their families. He was always excited to visit and enjoy different activities with each family who all adored him.
Paul loved going to church and being with his church family at Truth Assembly of God. For several years, Paul was involved in Sunday School classes at the Nazarene church with teachers Vera and Dale Peterson and then at First Baptist with Margaret Kridelbaugh as his teacher. He would attend Sunday School there in their special classes, then wait for his ride or walk over to "his" church.
Music was a big part of Paul's life, listening to everything from Pavorotti to Bluegrass, but he especially liked southern gospel. He loved to play the keyboard and his tambourine.
He loved sports...swimming, being especially adept at imitating a shark or a dolphin, and, of course, his famous Nestea Plunge. He enjoyed bowling ( bowling once a week in his younger years.) He liked shooting baskets and loved seeing his beloved "Packers" win. As far as he was concerned, they always won, even if they lost, and you better not tell him otherwise.
Paul loved holidays and parties. Being the big tease that he was, April Fool's Day was almost his favorite day, next to his birthday. If you were with him on that day, he was sure to tell you you had a hole in your pants.
Paul loved his birthdays. The moment one birthday had passed, he was looking forward to the next one. He especially enjoyed getting "dollars" in his cards...one was enough.
Over the years, Paul thoroughly enjoyed going to camps for exceptional persons...meeting other campers and being loved by the staff and counselors at each one.
Paul spent a lot of time in front of his TV. Some favorite shows were Daktari, Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy and, in years past, pro wrestling. Among his favorites were Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan.
Paul had several collections. Among them were caps; ties; wristwatches ;Green Bay Packer memorabilia; pins and pens. If your pen is missing, he probably assumed it was his and it's still in his collection.
The only things that Paul really hated was potato salad and sauerkraut and for that he took a lot of kidding.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Eula McVey and siblings: Geraldine "Jeri" (Hubert) Jacobs; Jack (Marjorie); Duane; David; Betty (Jim) Seward; Michael "Mickey" and Peggy (Larry) Oftedahl.
Paul will be greatly missed by his only living sibling: Phyllis Chilton and his brother in law Paul Chilton, of whom Paul S would often say, "He's just like my Dad to me." Paul's eighteen neices and nephews and their spouses and children will miss being able to tease him and be teased by him. Many other relatives and friends will also miss that big smile.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Truth Assembly of God Church in Chariton, Iowa. Visitation will be held at 10-11:00 a.m., at the Church. Use door #3. Interment will be held following the service at the Chariton Cemetery in Chariton. Officiation for Paul's funeral will be Pastor Don Hayes. Pallbearers that are serving the service will be Mark Jacobs, Phillip Jacobs, Jim Seward, Doug Chilton, Brad Chilton, Allan Chilton. Memorials may be directed either toward Truth Assembly of God Church in Chariton or Care Initiatives Hospice in Albia.Under the direction of Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa.
