Arvid Lester Stephens, age 90, of Hudson passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, at Christian Community Homes in Hudson.
Arvid was born on September 28, 1934, on a farm in Barron County, the son of Lester and Verna Stephens. He was third of four children and the only boy. He attended a country school in Hillsdale and later graduated from Barron High School. While growing up, he worked on the farm with his father. After high school, Arvid proudly served in the U S Army and was stationed in Germany.
He married Nancy Bargen on July 14, 1956, and they settled in Saint Croix Falls. They welcomed their only son Robert. Later, they moved their family to Amery, where they built a home overlooking the Apple River. Arvid managed the Amery branch of a mechanical contracting firm. In later years, he and Nancy moved to River Falls, where they owned and operated the Sears Catalog Store. Upon retirement, they settled at Wintergreen in Hudson and spent their winters in Rockport, Texas.
Arvid loved the outdoors. He spent many hours on the golf course in Amery. He also enjoyed fishing, both in Wisconsin and Texas. Arvid loved hunting. The tradition was for Arvid, his dad and Bob to make their annual trip up to Gordon for opening deer hunting. The second weekend was reserved for shenanigans with the guys at deer camp in Siren. (Hunting was optional!)
Over the years, Arvid and Nancy spent countless hours playing Bridge and other card games with their friends wherever they were. He also enjoyed Cribbage and Bingo.
Arvid will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor and ability to make anyone smile even at the worst of times. He was a respected member of his community, active in the local church, and a great friend to many. We will miss his mischievous smile.
Arvid is survived by Nancy, his wife of 69 years; son Robert (Susan); granddaughters Hannah (Alex) and Hayley (Carson); sister, Clairice (Jerry) Fisher. He is also survived by extended family members and his family at Wintergreen. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Leona and Cordelle.
Visitation 10-11 AM Friday October 10 with 11 AM Celebration of Life at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Arvid will be laid to rest at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner at a later date.
