Penny Louise Ellis, 61, a lifelong resident of Girard, died at 11:22 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2025 in Freeman West Health System in Joplin surrounded by her family.
Penny was born April 18, 1964 in Pittsburg, a daughter of Edgar W. and Edith E. (Fritz) Ellis. She grew up and attended schools in Arma and Pittsburg.
Penny worked as a CMA and CNA at the Gentry House in Arma, the Girard Medical Center and Westridge Assisted Living in Girard. She was a foster parent to over 30 children and welcomed numerous children throughout her life.
Penny enjoyed her family and family gatherings, playing Bingo, cooking, and traveling. She was a caring and loving mother, grandmother, and sister and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Survivors include her daughter, Amberly Samuel of Girard; her son, Scottie Thomas of Girard; her grandchildren, Brooklyn D. Tallie, Jaelynn S. Samuel, Broxston W. Rono, and Aubri Marie Thomas; her brother, Edgar "Ed" Ellis of Girard; her sisters, Sharon Coon, and her husband, Rick, of Girard, Mary A. Hukill of Pittsburg, and Donna Shook, and her husband, Justin, of Pittsburg; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William "Bill" Ellis; and her sisters, Rose M. Ellis, Vickie M. (Ellis) Martinez, and Deloris "Anne" (Ellis) Bearden.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Living Faith Church of the Nazarene near Girard with Pastor Mike Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Penny Louise Ellis Memorial Fund and these may be left at the service or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743
