Phylis was born in Cairo, Illinois, at St. Mary's Hospital, on March 6, 1948, to the union of Talley Hawkins Sr., and Lugenia Teen Hawkins (Turner).
Phylis was a professional model. She enjoyed gambling for quarters, dimes, nickels or pennies, playing card games, Tonk was her favorite; completing word search puzzles, lying in bed eating while watching westerns, and loved to feed birds, cats and dogs.
Phylis was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Alma Turner; father, Talley Hawkins Sr.; one sister, Caroline; two brothers, Talley Jr. and Reginald; two aunts, Shirley Turner and Maggie Jaques; one uncle, Paul Cox; cousins Ida Lee and Sharon Hayes.
Phylis leaves to cherish her memories: her mother, Lugenia Teen Hawkins of Sikeston, Missouri; two daughters, Joanne Hawkins of Mounds, Illinois and Emily Hawkins of Cairo, Illinois; one son, Chris Hawkins of Huntsville, Texas; ten grandchildren, Arlester Hawkins of Mounds, Illinois, Elesha Hawkins of Chicago, Illinois, Sharequal Hawkins, Ja'Kyra Hawkins, Kenneth Hawkins, and Kayauni Hawkins, all of Houston, Texas, Kiara Legg and Rae' Legg of Chicago, Illinois, Mariah Adkinson and Terence Adkinson Jr., of Mounds, Illinois. Phylis is also survived by her ten nieces, three nephews, 20 great nieces, 22 great nephews, 21 great-great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Jennifer Hawkins; special friends, Calvin Johnson and Niecy.
Visitation for Phylis Orlanda Turner- Hawkins will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Mounds, Illinois Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm until the funeral hour at 1:00 pm with Pastor Phillip Stone, officiating. Burial will follow at Spencer Heights in Mounds, Illinois.
