Ralph Edwin Varney, 70, of Waterville, passed peacefully on July 4th, 2025, with his daughter Kate by his side and the dedicated staff of the Maine Veterans Home nearby. A man of eccentric charm and untamed curiosity, Ralph will be fondly remembered for his love of hotrods, nature, and the little things that brought him joy.
Ralph served in the U.S. Navy-a brief but meaningful chapter in a life otherwise defined by creativity, independence, and an enduring fascination with the world around him. He spent countless hours tinkering with his beloved Jeep Wagoneers, thumbing through the pages of Weekly World News, and turning up the volume on Black Sabbath.
A passionate lover of nature, Ralph found peace in the outdoors and had a special bond with animals. He was a singular presence-quiet yet unforgettable, with a dry wit and deep warmth that revealed itself to those who took the time to know him. He shared a special connection with his grandson Jack, bonded by their love for the same music.
In his later years, Ralph was lovingly cared for by his daughter Kate, the compassionate staff at the Maine Veterans Home, and the team at MaineGeneral Hospice. Though his views were strong and his spirit bold, his absence will be profoundly felt by those who truly knew and loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Virginia Whitten; his daughters Kaitlyn Gerow, Misty Donoghue, and Joy; his sons Joshua Varney and Travis Donoghue; his sisters Cheryl, Donna Hilton, Barbara, Bobbie Jo, and Donna Whitten; and his brothers William Varney and Kevin. He also leaves behind several grandchildren, including his beloved Jack, as well as nieces and nephews. Ralph was predeceased by his father, Thomas Whitten, and his birth mother, Ruth Hersey.
Ralph wished to be cremated, with his ashes spread at a location special to him. He requested no service or celebration. In his memory, donations may be made to a local animal shelter.
