Raymond Billy Mitchell Jr., 72, passed away on July 23, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Raymond and Ann Dougherty Mitchell and was also predeceased by his sisters, Mary Layne Vaughan and Vana Gay Pierce.

Raymond honorably served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard for 26 years before retiring. He went on to work for Northrop Grumman as a PC Network Technician, a role that allowed him to travel to many different countries and states. He retired after 12 years of dedicated service.

A devoted member of Wilroy Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia, Raymond served with the New Beginning Sunday School. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and golfing. He also cherished watching western films with a cup of coffee and, above all, spending quality time with his family.

Raymond is lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Rose Bullock Mitchell; his stepchildren, Winston Craig Bullock (Tracey) and Kevin Wayne Bullock (Kelly); his grandchildren, Blake Bullock (Megan), Hannah Bullock, Noah Bullock (Paige), and Madison Bullock; and his great-grandchildren, Everly Bullock, LilyKate Bullock, and MaryBeth Bullock. He is also survived by many beloved friends.

The Mitchell family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, surgical team, and staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for their compassion and dedication to Raymond's care.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory (509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA), with visitation beginning one hour prior. In honor of his military service, Raymond will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America at https://www.dementiasociety.org/donate.
