Richard E. Gilbert, 78, of Columbus passed from this life on July 9, 2025, at 4:55 a.m. at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Born on August 16, 1946, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Frank Gilbert and Maxine M. Blackburn Cromwell.
Richard proudly served in the United States Army and retired after 17 years of service as a supervisor at the Parks & Recreation Department of Columbus.
Richard, a true family man, a revered member of the American Legion Riders, and a motorcycle enthusiast. He lived a life that was as full and vibrant as the open roads he loved to ride. He was also a supervisor and umpire for the Columbus Softball Association for over 30 years.
Richard's journey through life took a definitive turn on September 24, 1969, in Columbus, when he married his beloved wife, Peggy J. Brummett. Their partnership, characterized by shared laughter and resolute support for one another, was a testament to their enduring love. The Gilbert family flourished with the birth of their son, Donald R. Gilbert, also of Columbus, who carried on Richard's legacy of warmth and integrity.
Survivors include his grandchildren, Dr. Marlyssa (Dewayne) Fillmore, Amber L. Gilbert, and Logan R.P. Gilbert; and great-grandchildren, Kasyn, Ronan, and Deacon Fillmore, along with Ren N. Gilbert and Ray Nora Gilbert, were a source of immense joy and pride for Richard; their laughter and energy brought him continual happiness.
Richard's departure was preceded by that of his parents and his step-father, Donald L. Cromwell, who helped shape the man he became.
The values imparted by his family were evident in the way Richard conducted his life - with generosity, compassion, and a spirit of service. His affiliation with the American Legion Riders was more than a hobby; it was an expression of his commitment to community and country.
Those who were fortunate to cross paths with Richard were touched by his kind-hearted nature. He was quick to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement, and his presence was a comfort to many. Richard's approach to life, his enduring positivity, and his unwavering ethics have left an indelible imprint on the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
In keeping with Mr. Gilbert's wishes cremation will take place and family and friends may gather for visitation from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. There will be no formal memorial service.
