Richard Haber was born on August 26,1928 in Holysov, Bohemia. It was the first Czech Republic after the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy. Richard died Sunday, June 29, 2025 at Brookdale Kettering under Suncrest Hospice care.
His parents were Anna and Johann Haber. They were farmers. He had two older brothers Hans and Josef. After World War II, his mother and brother Hans and wife settled in Freiburg, Germany.
Richard studied construction at a State Trade School in Pilsen 1943 to 1944. He learned his bricklayer trade in 1946 at a Vocational School in Germany.
Richard immigrated to Canada in 1951 and worked in the Gold mines for two years.
In August 1953, he was initiated into the Bricklayers Union Local 1 Regina Saskatchewan.
He met Theresa Engelhardt who immigrated to Canada from Nuertingen, Germany where her family settled after World War II. Theresa’s original home was Vertesaca,Hungary.
They were married on August 20,1955 in Regina.
In 1958, they moved to Dayton, Ohio and have lived here ever since.
Richard also transferred to the Bricklayers Local 22 in Dayton, Ohio in 1958.
Theresa and Richard were married over 62 years.
He leaves behind three grieving children; two sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Richard and Theresa were members at the Dayton Liederkranz-Turner, GBU, Assumption and Ascension Parish, and the Dayton Opera. Richard was also a member of the Dayton Ski Club and the Dayton Chess Club.
He enjoyed watching soccer, traveling, bowling, writing, playing chess and Sunday’s at Cowan Lake.
He was a wonderful husband and father. His grandchildren will sorely miss their Opa. “May you rest in peace Opa.”
