Rita Marlene Mahoney, 86, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.
She was born on February 25, 1939, in Uniontown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anne (Serafin) Komanecky.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Roberta “Bobbi” Sandorf.
Rita was a graduate of North Union High School, Uniontown, PA, and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in education from California State College of California, PA, now known as PennWest University. She dedicated her career to teaching at Saint Mary Catholic School in Hagerstown, for 30+ years teaching Science, Math, and Religion. She took pride in educating middle school students.
Rita was a devoted member of the Lady Elks, American Legion Auxiliary, and St. Ann Golden Agers. She also led the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) ministry at St. Ann for several years, sharing her faith to lead others to the Catholic church. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and sewing, and had a great love for travel; having visited many locations across three continents over the course of her life. More than anything, Rita cherished the time spent with her family.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Regis Mahoney; two daughters, Laureen Lipscomb (Frank) of Jefferson, MD, and Beth Wright of Seabrook Island, SC; her brothers, A. Nicholas Komanecky (Jo Ann) of Liberty Township, OH, and Richard Komanecky (Kathy) of Strongsville, OH; her sister, Rosemary Johnson (Ronald) of Uniontown, PA; and her grandchildren, Matthew Raines of Hampton, VA, Nicholas Wright of Arlington, VA, Natalie Wright of Clearwater, FL, and Bethany Lipscomb of Baltimore, MD. She is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 18, at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
There will be no viewing. Inurnment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church (address listed above), or St. Mary Catholic School, 218 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD
