AULANDER, NC - Robert "Bobby" Winston Matthews, born on March 1, 1934, in Parmele, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 91 on July 28, 2025, in Aulander, North Carolina. Bobby lived a life rich in love, dedication, and joy, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Bobby's journey began in Murfreesboro High School, where he was known not only for his spirit on the football field but also for his commitment to his community. After leaving high school, he served honorably in the Army for two years, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his country.
In 1953, Bobby moved to Aulander when his father purchased a farm, and it was here that he discovered his lifelong passion for farming. With a deep love for the land, Bobby spent his life cultivating corn, cotton, soybeans, peanuts, and tobacco. His work was not just a profession but a testament to his commitment to nurturing the earth and providing for his family.
A member of the Aulander Baptist Church, Bobby's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was also actively involved with the Aulander Fire Department during his younger years, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Bobby's heart was as vast as the fields he tended. He cherished time spent outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or tending to his beloved garden. His greatest joy, however, came from watching his grandchildren play ball and enjoying family vacations. Bobby had an infectious enthusiasm for life, especially when it came to sharing meals with loved ones, never leaving a table without ensuring every plate was clean.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Corey and Lloyd Matthews; his brothers, Thomas and his wife Emmaleigh, Gene, and Alfred Ray Matthews; and his sisters, Rachel Conner and her husband Linwood, and Janice Riddick.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife of almost 69 years, Minerva Jean Hall Matthews; his children, Marty Matthews and wife Shelia of Millennium, NC, and Lori Parker and husband Joey of Aulander, NC; his grandchildren, Cody Matthews and wife Hanna of Smithfield, NC, and Kaitlyn Parker of Aulander, NC. He is also survived by his brother Jesse Matthews and wife Jean, sisters-in-law Nancy Matthews and Ola Ray Matthews, brother-in-law Eddie Riddick, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Friends are welcome to visit at the home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Hall-Rogerson Family Cemetery, Rogerson Street, Aulander, NC 27805.
