Francis Grott Obituary

Francis "Mike" Grott, age 94, passed away on November 8, 2025, in Issaquah, Washington. He was born on November 13, 1930, in Willard, Ohio, to Frank and Hazel (Baker) Grott.

Mike was raised near Cleveland, Ohio, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University. He proudly served his country during the Korean War as a United States Air Force F-86 fighter pilot, receiving numerous medals in recognition of his skill, courage, and dedicated service. Aviation was not only his profession but his lifelong passion. Over the course of his career, he flew for four airlines. He spent the final 32 years working with United Airlines, serving at the Denver Training Center as a DC-10 Manager, holding various leadership roles, and continuing to fly regular line trips.

In 1954, he married Merlyn Zulauf. Over their remarkable 70 years of marriage, they raised four children, made homes in ten different states, and traveled to several countries together. Mike loved his work and found joy in volunteering as a docent at The Museum of Flight. He also cherished time with his family and enjoyed travel, flying, golf, sailing, history, and reading.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Merlyn "Lynn" Grott; three daughters, Linda Portman of Colorado, Kathy (Andy) Weidman of South Carolina, and Leslie (Greg) Rice of Washington; and one son, Steven (Jayne) Grott of Colorado. He was a proud "Papa" to nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mike was a devoted husband, father, and friend who created countless cherished memories for those who knew and loved him.

In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held. His family will gather in remembrance at a summer family reunion in Washington.
