It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and loving mother, Bobbi Sumlin. Roberta (Bobbi) Sumlin, age 73, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at San Antonio Regional Hospital surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Bobbi was born on March 4, 1952 in Wailuku, Maui to Robert Matsuoka and Umeyo Irimata. She grew up in a house with her parents and brother, Karl Matsuoka. She attended the Public Grammar Schools of Hawaii at the Paia School and graduated from Maui High School. Bobbi then moved to California to attend college at the University of La Verne in La Verne, California.
She married David Sumlin on January 16, 1982 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Barden Wedding Chapel. Bobbi and her family resided in Fontana, California. Bobbi worked at Pomona Valley Hospital as a Medical Transcriptionist. She then went on to own and operate her own Medical Transcriptionist business for over nearly 30 years. She also worked at Coyote Canyon Elementary School as a Clerk Typist and participated as PTO president for many years.
Bobbi was known for her unwavering love for her family and friends. She touched countless lives with her generosity, dedication, love and humor. During the holidays, Bobbi was known to cook enough food for an entire army. She always wanted anyone and everyone to have a place to eat and be with family and friends even if they couldn't be with theirs. Bobbi was a firm believer in that family is more than just any blood relation. She was a true example of acts of servitude for others in constantly doing on to others no questions asked. She was a firm believer in keeping traditions, stories and recipes alive and passed onto future generations.
Bobbi loved to go shopping any day of the week to her favorite stores (ie. Home Goods, Hobby Lobby, Macy's, Buckle, Curl Surf and the World of Disney). Bobbi was a true Disney Enthusiast. Going to Disneyland with her family and friends was one of her favorite ways to spend time with the ones she loved the most. When at Disneyland, you could always find her at the nearest beer stand, in line for food or waiting for the next Disney parade to start. It will forever be her HAPPY PLACE. Bobbi loved watching movies, animals, watching random K-Pop shows, flowers, surfing, cooking, movie nights and reading. Bobbi always remained firm in her faith in Jesus and never let it waver throughout all of her blessings, trials, and tribulations throughout life. Throughout these experiences and challenges, Bobbi always remained firm in reading and reflecting upon the scripture of the Bible and how it teaches us to rely on God, grow in our faith, experience joy, anchor in hope and develop perseverance.
Bobbi's legacy isn't just in the life she lived. It's in the life that is still living with the pieces of her guiding them every step of the way. The biggest piece of her legacy that she leaves behind is her daughter, Danielle (Dani) Sumlin. Their relationship they shared will forever be remembered as a special bond; filled with love, laughter and countless cherished memories. Their bond was unbreakable, a testament to their enduring love and connection. They were the BEST of friends. You rarely saw one without the other. They could be seen on any day of the week out shopping, at Disneyland, driving to and from soccer practices or soccer tournaments and sharing meals together. Danielle will miss her mother's warmth, guidance, and unconditional love. Bobbi often spoke of her daughter's accomplishments with immense pride and joy. While her mother's passing leaves a void, Danielle will carry her love and legacy in her heart forever.
Bobbi is preceded in death by her father, Robert Matsuoka and mother, Umeyo Irimata. Bobbi is survived by her husband of 43 years, David Sumlin; her daughter, Danielle Sumlin; her beloved dogs, Sami and Chloe. Bobbi is also survived by her brother, Karl Matsuoka; honorary daughter and son, Ashley Klotz Overson and Brian Klotz; honorary granddaughter, Brynn Klotz; multiple honorary great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many near and dear friends and friends she considered as family.
Bobbi lived a life full of kindness, laughter, generosity and love. Though she may be gone, her spirit and memory lives on in the hearts of everyone she touched.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, July 25th from 11-2PM at the Upland Taiwan Presbyterian Church in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
