Ronald Johnson Obituary

Ronald Johnson passed away on April 20, 2025, in Louisville, Colorado, surrounded by family.

Ron was born to Arthur and Vivian Johnson in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, followed four years later by brother Larry. Sports were a major part of Ron's life, including little league baseball, cross country running, and track in his youth. In adulthood, he was an active member of Running Club North and remained active in cross country skiing, basketball, tennis, bicycling, canoeing and rafting, and hockey, often playing sports with colleagues at lunch.

In 1976 Ron married Carol Drewiany and they embarked on a magical 49-year journey. They became the proud parents of two daughters, Katie and Laura, with whom Ron was immediately smitten. One of their first trips was visiting family in Fairbanks, Alaska. Ron, then employed at Avco Systems Division in Massachusetts, was soon offered a faculty position at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Having earned his aerospace engineering degrees from Brown University (B.S.) and Cornell University (Ph.D.), he credited Rachel Carson's Silent Spring with his change of focus to environmental issues. In addition to teaching and research in air quality, water resources, and energy, for 21 years he walked, skied or bicycled to work every day. Ron chaired the Mechanical Engineering department, directed the UAF energy center, and retired after 33 years at UAF. He served in advisory roles for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Aging at Home, and the Retired Public Employees Association and participated in a weekly energy discussion group.

While bicycling in 1997, Ron suffered a spinal cord injury. Despite reduced mobility, he went on to live 27 very good years as a role model and activist for sustainability and accessibility. He maintained his large network of friends and good sense of humor until the end.

Ron leaves his wife, Carol; daughter, Katie (husband Curt); daughter, Laura (husband Dan and son Calvin); brother, Larry (wife Janet); sister-in-law, Janet Taylor (husband Scott); and nieces and nephews Erik, Ellen, Chris, Bryan and Jessie, and their families. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Fairbanks or KUAC.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Georgeson Botanical Gardens.

I enjoyed knowing Ron as an engineering professor, tennis player, and friend. Although he was never a power player, I never could beat him; no matter where I sent the ball, he'd always run it down and send it back.

As a professor, he was organized and easy to understand even for me as an undergrad in Civil Engineering. Over the next 40+ years, we were always happy to see each other and discuss things like alternate energy, hydro, solar, and even micro nuclear. As usual his knowledge of these things was encyclopedic.

He was always among the leaders of the Equinox Marathon, and later I watched him continue to work out as best he could after his accident. He was one of the nicest people I've known, and along with wife Carol he has passed that trait to his daughters. Carry on ladies!

Sorry to hear about Rons passing. He served as my major graduate school advisor and I always enjoyed our meetings and classes. He was very down to earth and always approachable. Ron was also responsible for securing funding for me to do the placer mining and water quality research for my degree. His dedication to sports and self propelled travel was admirable.

Such a wonderful life he led with a terrific wife and two daughters. And now a sweet grand child, Calvin. He is a lucky guy to have had such a full life. Much love to Carol and family. Life´s struggles are tough but as usual Carol did all she could and exemplifies courage and grace. Much love to all. Debbie D.

In loving memory of a wonderful person and neighbor. We always remember your kindness and you sharing tidbits of knowledge with us along the way. So happy you enjoyed visiting our fur-babies when they would escape the yard and go across the street to visit with the Johnsons! Sincerely, Andy & Sue

When ME and chemistry were both in Duckering, Ron and I would often discuss teaching, research, or outdoor adventures. He was accomplished in all these areas. I enjoyed his letters to the newspaper explaining technical aspects of recent environmental or political issues. Enjoy the new trails and windblown ridges wherever you are now, Ron!

Ron was a dear friend. All the years of running , skiing, winter camping, joking and just talking were special. The many trips sharing a small 2 man tent at 20 below provided memories frozen in my mind. Your love for your family, the outdoors and the environment make you the special person and friend you will always be.

Ron made such an impact on my life. As a Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Engineering professor he provided the necessary technical underpinnings for my work in both Environmental and Mechanical fields of practice. I wish the very best for his family and friends wherever they are.

I could not have been an Engineer without him.

Ron was one of my best friends and competitor in the Fairbanks running scene in the 1980s. We both ran at about the same level and would often battle for the finish line together, comically calling each other names down the finishing stretch. RIP buddy! You lived a great life!
