Ronald Usher Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home on Mar. 28, 2025.
Ronald F. Usher, 74, of Tolland, CT, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Ron was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family, his two sons and their spouses, Brandon & Sarah of Tolland, CT, and Patrick & Jaret of Acworth, GA, as well as his five cherished grandsons: Oscar, Gabriel, Emmett, Oliver, and Eli. He was predeceased by his wife and soulmate, Candy (Lee) Usher, in 2009 after 35 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Worcester, MA, to the late Catherine Ann (Chiaravalloti) and Alvin J. Usher, Ron moved to Rockville, CT, as a teenager and graduated from Rockville High School in 1968-where he met the love of his life, Candy. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a Military Police/Correctional Specialist before beginning a lifelong career at Pratt & Whitney, where he worked as a Security and Communications Officer for 40 years. He also served as the IF/SOA Union President for several years, advocating tirelessly for his colleagues.
After retirement, Ron fully embraced a life of leisure. A man of simple joys, he was known for handing out business cards that read, "Retired & Enjoying It! Grandfather of 5." He spent his time golfing, bowling in leagues, cheering for UConn and Red Sox games from his well-loved recliner, and listening to The Beatles. Fridays were reserved for gathering with friends at Emerald's in South Windsor, and he never passed up the chance to shop at Costco-usually for more than he needed. A lifelong hockey fan, he remained a devoted supporter of the Hartford Whalers.
Ron's greatest joy came from his family. After his mother's passing, he opened his home to Brandon and his family, creating an unbreakable bond with his grandsons, Oscar, Emmett, and Oliver. Whether coaching and cheering them on at Saturday morning bowling leagues, attending UConn games, enjoying Cape Cod adventures filled with mini-golf or relaxing poolside at home, Ron treasured every moment. His presence was a constant source of love and laughter, shaping the rhythm of daily life in ways that will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
His love extended a thousand miles south, where he frequently visited Patrick and his family in Georgia. Together, they played golf, hiked, watched Gabe and Eli's sports games, and explored local history-one of Ron's greatest passions. He never missed a chance to dine at Henry's Cajun Restaurant, proudly pronouncing it with his best Cajun accent. Whether attending Georgia Tech or Kennesaw State baseball games when UConn was in town or keeping up with Acworth's latest developments, Ron remained engaged and connected with "the Southern Ushers," as he affectionately called them.
Ron's family will receive friends for calling hours on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 5–7 PM at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, Vernon, CT 06066. Inurnment with military honors will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 2 PM at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT 06457. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Sturbridge Village at www.osv.org/donate, an organization that reflected Ron's love of history. Ron's warmth, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be forever cherished. His was a life well-lived and well-loved.
