Russell MacDowall Obituary

Age 83, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Born on December 22, 1940 in

Elmira, son of the late, Harry & Helen Doty MacDowall. In service to his country, Russ served in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962. His Naval Service brought about a lasting love for country, a strong patriotic spirit, and immense gratitude for all who served. After serving his country, Russ began a long career at Purolator in Horseheads as a commercial electrician. An avid outdoorsman, Russ enjoyed fishing and hunting. Russ treasured the time on the open water with his boat and friends trout fishing. He was a member and past President of the Finger Lakes Trollers Association. He was a fierce competitor and well-respected angler having won their club championship eight times. When he wasn't fishing, he was pursuing white tail deer along with his nephews and brother-in-law. He was known by his family for his patience in pursuing trophy buck and his marksmanship. After hunting season, he logged many miles traversing the country-side searching for antler sheds. All of his recreational activities produced many stories that were often shared time and time again at family gatherings. His family will cherish the stories and will remember Russ as a great admirer of the outdoors. His competitive spirit carried over to the bowling lanes where he competed with many of his close friends up until his final days. He is survived by his loving sister, Rita (Dennis) Grinnell, brother-in-law, Willis Cunnagin, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by grandchildren, Cierra and Cayden, cherished friends, Paula Casselberry, Rochelle Casselberry, Marty Watson, Bob Carney, and his beloved canine companion, Maggie. In addition to his parents, Russ was predeceased by his brother, Roger MacDowall; sisters, Flora Cunnagin and Ruth Olszowy; and nephew, Timothy Olszowy. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Corning Cancer Center, 2 Guthrie Dr. Corning, NY 14830. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff for their compassionate care of Mr. MacDowall. A private memorial service will take place at the convenience of the family.
