Ruth Christensen, cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully left this life on Wednesday, June 25, at SMP Health-Maryhill in Enderlin, where she was surrounded by love and gentle care in her final years. At 95, she was a remarkable woman whose warmth, strength, and kindness touched all who knew her.
Born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, in 1930 to Rodella and Harry Cumberland, Ruth's early years on her family's ranch instilled in her a deep love of the land and a resilient spirit. As the oldest of three sisters, she enthusiastically shared the joys and responsibilities of ranch life, laying the foundation for the hardworking, caring woman she became.
In 1955 Ruth married Louie Christensen and moved to Nome, ND where they farmed and raised their children, Craig, Audrey, Earl and Dean. Ruth wore many hats as a farmer's wife. Never scared of hard work, she was invaluable to the success of their farm. To the end of her life she kept an eye on the weather, the crops and what was happening in the fields. For many years you could often find flowers from Ruth's garden decorating the altar at her home church, Zion Lutheran Church in Nome. That eye for beauty also led to an extensive curated collection of Depression glassware that Ruth bought and sold for many years. Perhaps one thing that Ruth will always be remembered for are the many beautiful quilts she sewed. With a cup of coffee always nearby, thousands of hours of cutting and sewing resulted in dozens and dozens of quilts -each one a labor of love, warmth, and hope, given freely to friends and family.
A vibrant, "can-do" soul, Ruth was never afraid to get her hands dirty-whether canning, baking, gardening, or sewing. Her quick wit and hearty exclamations like "Oh, for Pete's sake!" or "What the Sam Hill?" brought smiles and laughter to all around her, especially when things didn't go quite as planned.
Ruth's legacy lives on through her children-Craig (Peggy), Earl (Kim), Dean, and Audrey (Andrew) McCartney-and her beloved grandchildren, Curran, Bryce, Faith, Brooke, Evan, Lauren, and Hope. Their lives are richer because of her unwavering love and the countless lessons she shared.
A visitation will be held at Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Lisbon on Tuesday, July 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with a prayer service following at 7 pm. A memorial service celebrating Ruth's beautiful life will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church in Enderlin on Wednesday, July 2, at 2 pm. Ruth's service will be live streamed below.
Ruth's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the simple joys of everyday life. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those she touched.
