Scott Friedman Obituary

Scott Douglas Friedman, M.D., a beloved physician, husband, father, and advocate for the environment, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in Sun Valley, Idaho, surrounded by his family. Born on February 28, 1954, in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Friedman dedicated his life to the care of his patients and the betterment of his community.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree, Magna cum Laude, from Washington College in Chestertown, MD, Dr. Friedman went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Maryland, also graduating Magna cum Laude and attaining membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital and pursued a Cardiology Fellowship at Boston University. He subsequently became a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and was also board certified in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Friedman moved to Easton, Maryland, where he became a partner at the Chesapeake Cardiology Clinic and later served with the Shore Health System of the University of Maryland. His pioneering spirit led to the opening of a catheterization lab, where he took on the additional responsibilities of implanting pacemakers and defibrillators. Throughout his career, he was an active member of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, contributing to the improved care of patients with myocardial infarction by helping to develop a statewide plan to decrease the time it took to receive therapy.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Friedman played a vital role in the establishment of Gunston Day School and serving on its board of directors. His commitment to the environment deepened in retirement, culminating in his involvement with the Idaho Conservation League, starting as a Wilderness Steward and eventually becoming the board chairman.

Scott was not only a dedicated physician but also a wonderful husband and father, married for 43 years to his wife Cathy. He is remembered fondly by his son Nicholas Friedman and his wife Margaret, and his daughter Kendall Verge and her husband Ben, as well as his treasured grandsons, Gus and Wesley. He is also survived by his sister Robin Friedman (Rod) and his brother Timothy Friedman, who share many cherished memories of him.

Scott had an adventurous spirit outside of medicine; he loved sailing on the Chesapeake Bay-both racing and cruising-and was an avid tennis player. His outdoor pursuits included fly fishing the Big Wood River and skiing in Sun Valley, where he joined the Mountain Masters. He also loved cross-country skiing. His enthusiasm for travel led him to explore many places with his beloved wife, and he relished hiking in the breathtaking landscapes of the Big Wood River and Sawtooth Valleys.

Scott's kindness, professionalism, and warm smile left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas; his mother, Marie; and his sister, Wendy. As we remember Dr. Scott Douglas Friedman, we celebrate his profound impact on both his family and his community, honored to have experienced his grace and compassion in our lives.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Wednesday, August 6, from 6-8 pm at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, 11 Gimlet Rd, Ketchum, Idaho, 83340.
