Sharron Murphey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2025.
Sharron Sue Bowman Murphey, 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born in Johnson City on March 13, 1948, Sharron pursued a life of learning and service through education. She began her teaching career in Detroit, Michigan, before returning home to Tennessee, where she spent 15 years inspiring students in history, psychology, and English at Mountain City High School. Known for her quick wit, warm smile, and lively storytelling, she left a lasting mark on every classroom she touched.

Outside the classroom, Sharron invested in and managed residential properties across East Tennessee, taking pride in restoring homes and helping families find a place to live. She also embraced adventure, exploring new foods, embarking on road trips, and frequently flying to Hawai'i to visit her son. In recent years she found great joy in uncovering and celebrating her Melungeon heritage, sharing those discoveries with family and friends.

Sharron is survived by her children, Pat Murphey (40) of Hawai'i and Liz Murphey (38) of Elizabethton; three cherished grandchildren; her sister, Terri Hamm; and her former husband and lifelong friend, Jim Murphey.

Honoring Sharron's wishes, no formal funeral will be held. The family will celebrate her life privately and scatter her ashes next month in a place she loved.
